Question about 2004 Jaguar XJR-Series
I had the same issue...I went to Auto Zone and got a diagnostic...Came back that my Throttle Position Sensor was faulty...However after taking it to the dealer, and paying 135.00 for THEIR diagnostic...You can't simply buy the sensor. You have to buy a new Throttle Body at 902.00 + Tax atleast here in Vegas. I hope it's not your problem, but go get a FREE diagnostic first.

I have a 2000 XJ8 without cruise control which displayed the engine fail safe mode and refused to start at all. However it starts no problem in neutral. Must be a sensor on the park gear.

My year 2000 XJ8 engine would not crank, warning sign said 'engine fail safe mode' or similar. only happens when engine is hot. Problem diagnosed as adjustment required to cable from gear shift. When the shift was in the 'P' the red light was not on (it should be). I think the sensore tells the ECU the gear box lever is in the wrong position to allow starting. You could try and start it in the 'N' position, I have been told.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 Jaguar XJR V8 Supercharge, and the ASC trac not available and Failsafe engine mode sign came on. The car engine shut down and I was able to restart the car, it happened when the car was
As most likely know the engine in your Jag is controlled by a computer, when it senses a serious fault in any of the systems it monitors it can trigger a shut down with a restart, the shut down and needed restart is the same as rebooting a computer for a problem that has occurred in the system. What must be done now is to have the local dealer or a very well equipped shop run a scan of the computers memory, there will be fault codes stored for they event and warning lights. So get it tested.
