Question about 2001 Ford Windstar

Cannot get the rear brake drums off. Both axles spin freely and the emergency brake is fully released.

The only way to do it is take a hammer and BEAT BEAT till they loosen they get a rust ring that hangs them up against the e brake pads. hope this helps.

Noise during braking


I read some comments about the rear brakes. Some of the base models have drums on the rear and they have a tricky brake expander on the top. Also some drums come with bearings installed and some do not. Last, the shoes may have a thick and thin shoe on each axle side. This may be because the Emergency brake needs thicker shoes. Old time front shoes had a long and short shoe with I believe the long shoe rearward.

As some people had trouble obtaining the correct set of shoes, finding the adjusters and returning them to zero; it is possible that the Emergency brake reel needs to be released to let the E brake cable to return to its fullest length. This would let the rear shoes have the most room for adjustment and retract them.

Many speak of 2 hours minimum for this project. With bearings needing to be installed in cheaper drums and more than 1 brake shoe called for, this may be a fitting project for a Professional.

Emergency brake stuck


Raise the car , use jack stands for safety, inspect the e-brake cable assemblies along the bottom of the car for any signs of impact damage. Next, spin each wheel to see if one or both wheels are affected. Remove both rear wheels , if you have drums, try to wiggle or pry the drum off with a couple of screw drivers , inspect for fallen or broken hardware, if all looks ok, roll the adjuster so the drums can be installed freely. If this is caliper style, remove caliper , press and rotate the piston inward at least 1/4 ,if your going to install new pads, go all the way in, re-install calipers and wheels, depress brake pedal until firm and recheck wheels for binding.

Rear tire locked up


if your in a place to work on it remove back wheel and check the cable they rust when not used for long time pull the lever where the cable connects

My '83 dodge ram van goes in reverse fine,but when i try to go forward, the R rear wheel spins, seems the L rear is jamming?? is this a diff or brake issue?


sometimes the emergency brake will stick even after it is released. Most drum brakes will still let it go backwards but not forward. I would pull the rear drums and check. If e/brake is stuck removing the left drum will be difficult. If so then you will have to manually adjust the brakes until drum loosens up. good luck

My 94 dakota 4x4 feels like the brake is on when i drive forward but is fine in reverse. I have taken the tires off and the brake drums and every thing looks find but the drivers rear drum doesnt want to...


you could have a damaged drum .. many auto parts stores can test that for you .. could be a bent axel or flange (spin the rear wheel and see if it woobles ... or maybe you have a bent lug bolt .. the other symptoms you have are typical of a stuck emergency brake cable .. shoe/drum type brakes are regenerative in the forward direction .. that is they work with greater force forward than backwards .. so if you have a stuck emergency brake cable (and thats common for dodge) then you may have overheated the drum causing warping .. you can check to see if the cable moves freely by pulling sidways on it (if its open) or having someone operate and release with you under the truck .. it should move maybe an inch and release quickly . of course a bent flange or axel can cause a similar result ..

How do I adjust emergency brake cable on 1999 ford taurus. I replaced rear brake pads, cylinders and drums, but now have no emergency brake so need to know how to adjust.


FIRST adjust rear brake starwheel while spinning tire FOWARD. then alongside drivers side of car find emergency brake cable adjustment (long threaded rod with nut) . hold one end of rod with vise-grips and turn nut until emer. brake cable has less slack in it. now go inside car and apply e-brake.you dont want the pedal to stop right away but u also dont want too much"travel" in the pedal.so about halfway is IDEAL. IMPORTANT- once the brake cable is adjusted and the car wont roll foward in gear with the brake on and applying a little "gas"-make sure with brake OFF that rear wheels turn freely. hope this helps.

a brass hammer or punch really helps in this situation because you can hit the drum and the brass will take all the damage might want to consider buying one of these

2004 honda crv brake won't release


Your emergency brake is a mechanical brake system that is indipendant of the regular hydrolic system. If the red brake light on the dash is on make sure it's the emerg. brake and not a problem with the fluid level or the calapers sticking. the best way to check the emerg. brake is to rase both rear wheels off the ground and spin them. If they spin, the emerg. brake is not locked up. If they don't spin, take the rear tires off and the brake drums. (you may have rear disk brakes.) check the springs to insure they are all hooked up properly. If there is no problem there, follow the parking brake cable to check for damage. The cable is like a brake cable on a bike, If the inner cable is binding inside the cable sleeve,the brake wont release. If you have rear disc, it's probly a bad calaper.The park brake cable is attached to the calapers. Rember if it wont run it's annoying but if it won't stop, it's deadly. DON"T experiment with brakes!!! If in doubt, take it to a pro.

Loose emergency brake on 2004 Saturn Vue


  1. Apply and fully release the park brake several times. Verify that the park brake lever releases completely.
  2. Turn ON the ignition. Verify the red BRAKE warning lamp is not illuminated.
  3. If the red BRAKE warning lamp is illuminated, verify the following:
    • The park brake lever is in the fully released position and against the stop.
    • There is no slack in the park brake cable.
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disable the SIR system.
  3. Remove the front floor console.
  4. With the park brake lever in the released position, using ONLY hand tools, loosen the adjusting nut completely to the end of the front cable threaded rod.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
  7. Adjust the rear drum brakes.
  8. Ensure there is no brake shoe drag after adjustment by rotating the brake drums. If drag exists, re-center the brake shoes and perform the brake shoe adjustment again.
  9. Install 2 wheel nuts to the wheel studs and firmly hand tighten in order to retain the brake drums.
  10. Lower the vehicle to permit access to the park brake lever.
  11. Raise the park brake lever 1 detent position. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
