Question about 1997 Lincoln Town Car
If the brake light switch doesn't work then the solenoid that allows you to move the gear selector out of park is locked out, it is a safety feature required by law, jump the brake light switch with a paper clip ( verify the brake lights are on) and see if you can get it out of park, I am sure it will now come out, then either replace the brake light switch or the wiring to it, many times the wires to the connector of the brake light switch brake inside the plastic insulation, so the outside looks good but the connection is not there or comes and goes, I suspect this is the problem with your car. The solenoid I mentioned is on top of the steering column.

My vihicle for some reason wouldnt go into gear. I knew it had just been going into gear just fine. Turns out it was a fuse. Inside the cab, you will find a blown fuse. My fuse re-blew out soon after. I moved to a stronger fuse and its been fine for years. Hope this helps. GL

The park lock mechanism is deactivated by the brake switch. Check to make sure the brake lights are working before any other repairs are made. When the key is in the on position and you depress the brake pedal it allows you to take the car out of park. One can usually turn the key one click and not have power to the park lock mechanism. Then depress the brake pedal and put the car in neutral. With your foot on the brake pedal you can start the car and drive normal but when you put the car in park the process will have to be repeated. Often times one of the wires to the brake light switch on the brake pedal gets brittle and causes intermittent contact or no contact. Check this first.

My switch broke at least 4 times.... to get car out of gear in this emergency situation, just turn ignition switch half way, shift to neutral, start car, and go to your shop. brake lights will not be working, so use hand signs.
