F150 ignition (won't Start)

I've got a 1985 5.0 V8 It won't start 80% of the time there doesn't seem to be any rime or reason as to when it does start and doesn't. As far as I can tell the fuel pumps work. the ignition module has been replaced. Coil is good Distributor is good plugs are good. everything seems to be operating properly. But most of the time it won;t start. When it does it runs fine but when you turn it off and try to restart it sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. Monday I went to it started it ran it and drove it for half hour then shut it off and it restarted.then let it sit for 1/2 hour and it started again an hour later it would not start. and hasn't started sinceand this is wednesday. the last time it started was the thursday of last week ??????

WHen it doesn't fire up it does sort of want to try just as you turn it off. Also if we use starter fluid it fires off al the time. Timing is fine. We were thinking posibly the computer keeping the injectors from opening during start??

If it turns over but just won't fire and the timing sounds fine when it does run you might consider your ignition switch.  Does it sound like it wants to fire but only just when you let go of the key?

I replaced starter on 1989 f150 5.0 now have no spark

Mike, Check for diagnostic codes. Check fuses/relays,wires/plugs for pinched, damage or corrosion. Could be a lot of things like distributor armature, cap, rotor, stator, ICM, coil, spark plugs, wires, make sure ground is good to distributor. Use the attached forum links, instruction, guides to help diagnose ignition spark problems, Good luck

Tip

I removed the battery and now the car won't start

'I disconnected the car battery/changed the car battery and now my car won't start'

Another common question on Fixya.
You've done nothing wrong. It's simply that the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key.

Put the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition on. Press the LOCK button twice on your remote. Wait 1 minute.

Turn the ignition off and press the UNLOCK button on the remote a couple of times. This will disarm the immobiliser.

The key should be recognised and your vehicle will start.

Replaced distributor, reset timing, replaced plugs and wires still won't start

You reset the timing but it won't start ??
Are you sure the timing is not 180 degrees off ?
Does it have normal compression and fuel pressure ?

1985 ford f150 300 6 cylinder with electronic ignition has spark to all 6 and fuel but won't start. All fuses are good and firing order is correct.

Get a testing light and connect it to the injector wires. You can have fuel pressure, but if the injectors do not open, it will not get fuel.

Test with starting fluid to see if fuel is the problem. If you have spark and no response after adding the starting fluid, its something else. Since the timing chain has nothing to do with the crankshaft sensor sending a signal as the crankshaft turns, the top half of the engine may not be turning to move the valves. Look in any breather holes in the valve cover to see if the tappets are moving.

1995 Oldsmobile Aurora will start sometimes and other times it won't, I replaced the starter and still the same.

If the engine cranks but won't start, the battery and starter are out of the picture.
When it won't start, someone will need to check fuel pressure and for spark at the plugs to proceed.

1985 ford f150 turns over but won't start

Have you checked to see if it is getting spark? Do you know if the fuel pump works? Have you tried starter fluid to see if the engine will run on that?

Have a 1985 ford f150 302 efi v8 need to know the firing order?

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 The rotor turns counter-clockwise. Make sure to keep #7 and #8 spark plug wires separated. The 5.0L had a problem with 7 and 8 cross-firing because they fire so close to each other. Ford changed the firing order on that engine, in later years , because of that reason. Hope this helps ya... Cobra :-)

Ford f150 starting problem

A low battery or loose cable connection could be your problem. If the starter is not getting enough amps to crank the solenoid will click in and out.
