Question about Chevrolet Sportvan

1 Answer

I have a 1978 Chevy Camper Van that has a problem. When I try to start it after it has sat for a period of time I have to prime the carborater. Also has a problem with it's choke. Sometimes it acts like the automatic choke is stuck and it doesn't want to run right.

The check valve in the fuel pump may have gone bad causing fuel to leave the carb and lines thus losing the prime far as the choke i wonder if it is getting power and if the vacum pull off is working.

Do you have a diagram for the belts on a 1978 1 ton Chevy van?

Every 1978 Chevy van was shipped with a sticker affixed to the engine shroud, showing a diagram of the belt threading. If this sticker is lost, you're a little lost as well, since the belt threading varies with engine and optional equipment (such as air conditioning, California emissions, power steering, etc.).
Your best bet if you can't find the sticker is to do an Internet search for "1978 Chevy belt routing) and see which engine configuration most closely matches what you have... and install the belts THAT way. Sorry I couldn't provide a definitive answer!

01 chevy express van security light flashing and van won't start. Van sat for a while battery was completely dead charged it and put a new battery in it and now it won't start. Just cranks over

Do a reset. Ten minutes on, 30 seconds off. Try to start. If it doesn't, do a relearn. Which is 3 times the reset , don't try to start until the third time. Have a charger handy, don't let the battery get low.

96 deville takes 2 to 3 times to start but only on mornings and it smells like gasoline and some times the service engine comes on or the service emission or some times both at same time and if i dont use...

Check and see what code(s) may be stored in the PCM.
Also, listen for the pump to prime for about 2 seconds when you first turn the key.
If it does not prime your fuel pump relay may be faulty. With extended cranking, the oil pressures builds up and then the oil pressure switch will energize the pump. When the car has not sat long there is still enough oil pressure in the system to energize the pump for quiker starts. Sitting over night or for a long period and the pressure has plenty of time to drop.

I own a 1978 motor home with a qne ton van frame\r...

Over an extended period of time gas will evaporate in a carburator. It's possible that presure is leaking off in your fuel pump as well. A weak pump will have trouble maintaining pressure over a period of time and will have trouble building pressure back up. Starting the engine on a regular basis and letting it run for a few minutes will cure the problem and help keep the engine seals from drying out and leaking. Converting to an electric fuel pump will also make it easier to start after sitting for a period of time.
Any generic LOW PRESSURE electric pump will work. It only needs to put out between 7 and 9 or 10 pounds pressure. Unhook the fuel lines from your mechanical pump and hook to the electric. The li ne from the tank goes on the inlet end. The electric pump usually ground through the case so it needs contact with bare metal or a wire running from the case to bare metal. Run the power wire to a powered wire in the engine compartment that powers on and off with the key or to an accessory fuse in the fuse box. It should run through a 20A fuse.
Hope this helps.
