Question about 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

2 Answers

Car stalls my 94 olds ciera runs well. it starts up just fine and runs great in the morning and at night when its cool. the problem is when i drive it in the middle of the day it stalls on me. i dont believe its overheating because the temp gauge is only in the middle and i havent seen any smoke from the engine. it wont start immediatly after it stalls. i have to turn it over at least 5 - 10 times and sometimes when it will try to start but when i give it some gas it just sputters and dies again. it does eventually start back up but it only does this to me in the middle of the day when its hotter outside. can anyone help me with this

change your fuel cap its leaking pressure

I have the same problem and have found that if I depressurize the fuel in the fuel rail, it seems like there is a lot of air in the line. I can relieve this 'air' and the car usually starts right back up but again happens when it is hot outside - not just when the engine is hot.

I believe that there is a leak in the fuel line or the gas tank or possibly even the sending unit gasket/sealing area and is allowing air into the system. This would explain the hot temperature variable because of expansion due to the temperature outside.

One more variable that might be worth noting: When I fill up the gas tank all the way, gas will spill out onto the ground. This may be the filling tube neck or the gas tank itself but I have not been able to find the hole or leak yet.

I do think that this is a common problem with the oldsmobile so possibly there is a particular area that rusts on these cars and causes this problem.

I will post again if I am able to fix the problem but thought that maybe some more insight could help brainstorm the problem - hope it helps.

i have the same problem with my 94 olds, it is not the crank censor as i have replaced that along with the fuel pump, fuel filter, was told it could be a o2 censor or throttle censor. but then i have no idea. my car can go for days then stalls and wont go for days.

I finally took the car to the mechanic. They had to replace the sending unit and the fuel pump to begin with. After this the car would run but then had a problem charging and the alternator had to be replaced.

In hind sight - this could have been at least partially the alternator all along. If the battery dropped below 12 volts, the fuel pump would cut out intermittently and cause the irregular fuel pressure and possibly lead to the fuel pump failure (?).

Also, as originally posted, the sending unit was faulty and very rusty which would contribute to the unstable fuel pressure.

The car is now fixed and I can not say that it was one particular component that resolved the issue but thought I would update the post - hope it helps.

I had a 87 ceira and it did the same thing. I called a repair shop and they told mr to change out the crank position cenor and it worked great no more stalling. Or check your air filter hose and see if it has a hole in it.

Fuel injector is leaking. Change the injector located inside the throttle body. It is loading up with too much gas during the night, abut is running fine when the excess fuel burns out of the system.
