Question about 1992 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

Was driving, and my car just shut off. it didnt sputter and die, it was instant, like flipping a switch. battery voltage good, windows/lights operate. but you know how when you put your key in your cars ignition and turn it to ACC, the dash lights up? mine doesnt. leads me to believe ignition switch went bad. when i put my key in, no lights/sounds/activity on ACC, and when i turn to start, nothing. not even a sound.its a 92 prelude si, manual. thanks for any and all info.i did try shaking the key to see if it might make some type of contact inside, but it didnt work.would my starter go bad while im driving? and then cause my car to shut off the way it did, without even letting the dash lights come on? ill check it far as radiator level, ill check on that. but when i checked fluids last weekend, the overflow resovoir was almost all the way full, so im pretty sure its still good. but ill check.i checked all the fuses. im not sure how to check the ignition switch. as soon as i get the car in my garage ill be able to look better, its on the city street and i cant have driver door open while im lookin at dash stuff.yesterday though, after it happened, windows/sunroof, headlights, signals all worked. today, at first none of it worked, at all. but i messed around with the wiring in steering column and i got signals/lights back on, but no windows/sunroof. i dunno what to do. would faulty charger or alternator cause the ignition switch to do absolutely nothing?

2004 Nissan Altima 3.5L BATTERY LIGHT went on during 15 minute drive. Next day car "died" while idling after a 20 minute drive. BRAKE WARNING LIGHT & BATTERY LIGHT on prior to full electrical failure.

Start with checking the alternator voltage with a multimeter. With the car off check the voltage in the battery which should be holding 12v charged less if flat of course then start the car and test the battery again. If the alternator is good you should be getting a reading of 14 to 14.5 v if it's the alternator it'll A) not put any charge into the battery or B) be a very low voltage being anything under 13.5 v

If it was fuel related it would have sputtered as it ran out of gas. I think it is lack of spark caused by a failing crankshaft or camshaft position sensor.

2001 ford f-150 no power to fuel pump or safety shut off relays good

You say the fuses and relays are good.
I'm showing three wires for the relay.
One lite blue and orange is battery voltage from the fuse.
The other lite blue and orange is ground from the computer. When the computer grounds the relay voltage should be sent to the inertia switch on the dark green yellow wire.
You should be able to jumper the power and dark green yellow to make the pump run.

My car was running fine. shut it off and tried to restart it 15 minutes later - cranks, sputters but will not start. has spark and good fuel flow. throttle body looks ok. changed plugs and injectors. ...

Not sure if you have one fitted but if it runs while the key is in the start position but dies when you let it back to the ignition position it could be an open circuit ballast resistor. Can you smell unburnt fuel? What voltage is the battery at?
Not sure why the warning lights would blink.

I have a 92 sonoma and i was driving and the truck died....i check battery and was good and tight connections...replaced the ignition switch and didnt help...when the key is on i get no dash lights, no...

If your were driving and the engine suddenly quit the battery would not be the culprit.
From all of the indications that you mention it sounds like a fusable link has malfunctioned. If that is the case, make sure you isolate the reason for the fuseable link burning before you replace it.

Car dies after about 20 minutes of driving, sputters slightly .

The fuel pump relay needs to be replaced. it is behind the battery and the fire wall.

Either you threw a belt or the alternator went bad. Your symptoms sound like were running on the battery till you ran out of power.

Battery good, power to starter, engine won't turn over

The battery is good, interior and exsterior lights strong, volts good, but the engine won't turn over.
Any of the accessories will operate fine with a nearly dead battery and will only pull down the battery voltage at the terminals very little. A healthy battery will deliver at least 11 volts with all your lights, stereo, power windows, etc. operating at once.     If your lights are only dimming a little when starting, you may have an oxidized connection at the starter terminal so this needs to be checked too.
If the ground terminal (negative) is corroded where chassis and engine come together, this can drop too much voltage and, if bad enough, could shut down your engine too.
