the haynes repair manual says on that year model with a 2.5, you can't replace only the coil. they say you have to replace the whole distributor. is that a true statement? do you think it could be the crank sensor?

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2011

if i can pour water on the distributor cap and cool it down then the car starts, sounds like the coil is heating up.right?

Usually, you only replace the Distributor Cap and Rotor, not the Distributor itself.

Your ignition coil and camshaft position sensor is built in to the distributor. You should be able to pull the distributor out after removing 2 bolts holding the base of the distributor to the engine. If the car isn't running, I would say check the timing, crank sensor, etc. If it is misfiring, check the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, distributor, etc.

It is possible that the ignition coil in the distributor is breaking connection when it heats up, and the water cools it down to the point where it starts working again.

How to Replace a Distributor Cap in Toyota?

Its a plastic cap and and on its top the sparks wires get connected.A small plastic rotor spins inside the distributor cap, firing each spark plug as it rotates. If the distributor gets faulty there the engine may not perform well. in most cases it has been noticed that only replacing the cap does not helps but with cap the rotors also need to be replaced. The procedure is as follows:--- 1) First of all disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2) Then remove the spark-plug wires . Note:-- Before removing the spark plug wires please note down how and where the wires are connected, then only remove the connections. 3) Then on the distributor there will be a cap.remove that cap.the cap is connected by two will have to press the pins from each side to loosen the distributor cap. Then lift the distributor cap from the top. 4)Then remove the rotor From distributor The rotor is fitted with two screws.Remove the screws and loosen the rotor. 5) Then lift the rotor out from its shaft. 6) To install new rotor and cap.reverse the procedure. This will help.Thanks.

Car started and ran fine, quit while driving and now there is no spark and turns over.

Hello first of all

In reading your issue at hand not having no spark there is only a few things that can cause this being that its a 1988 car i will list below what you need to go over and check.

1.spark plug wires
2. distributor cap
3. ignition rotor
4. coil pick up
5. faulty distributor

That being said most are a easy and cheap fix plug wires run about 20-35 bucks autozones duralast brand , distributor cap runs between 7-18 bucks , ignition rotor 3-8 bucks , coil pick up about 15-30 bucks all at autozone.

Now there is no real way to tell if there bad but a good examination of the distributor cap and rotor should tell you corroded inside cracked worn down.

i would start with distributor cap , ignition rotor, coil pick up if the car starts after this replace spark plugs wires. If that does not fix it most likely you distributor is faulty itself.

i hope it helps if so could you leave me so 4 thumbs up feedback thanks so much

1993 chevy blazer s-10 won't start no spark beyond distributer

You will need to check the ignition system for any faults.
This could be one of the following:
1: The ignition module
2: Voltage supply to the coil.
3. The rotor in the distributor.
4. The distributor cap itself.

Check these out and it should help you rectify this problem.

I have a 94 s10 blazer 4.3 and I had to remove the distributor but never marked it so now the timing is messed up. The distributor dose not have a #6 alignment mark so I cant get it working right. How do I...

Remove cylinder # 1 spark plug, # 1 is the front one on drives side, turn crankshaft pulley to TDC on compression stroke, you'll feel the comperssion at cylinder #1 spark plug hole, follow cylinder # 1 spark plug wire to distributor cap, mark outer part of distributor where # 1 sits, remove distributor and restabe distributor with rotor at mark you made, then set timing.

Dont know what the problem is

Check fuel pressure and check for spark and check that the airflow meter is operating, check for timing as well. Check for any wiring problems(loose connections, corrosion, condensation in distributor cap. Check distributor cap+rotor plug wire from coil to distributor. Check for any worn or damaged wiring or bad ground wire contacts. Air, Fuel, Spark and Timing are the key elements for an engine to run.

1992 Cadillac Deville Sedan

i have two codes on my 92 cadillac sadan deville that read e 12 and e 96. i understand what they both mean. e12 is 'no distributor signal', and the other e 96 is 'torque convertor is overstrewsed'. i know that the toruque convertor is a big project itself, so im goin to send that into the professionals. but i might be able to fix the distributor, if it is the cap, or a false ground wire which hopefully it is. there is about 170,000 mi, and have gone threw alot of parts that i installed myself, but im not goin to let her go yet she still got alot of miles to go. i just need help on checking out the distributor cap for replacement.

1990 deville distributor

With a car that year, the only replaceable item is the rotor button. The cap itself is also replaceable. If the gear itself gets damaged, you have to replace the whole thing.
