Question about Chevrolet Prizm

3 Answers

Car began sputtering badly, like plugged fuel filter. Replaced but did not fix. Checked injectors by unplugging each one while car was running. Found that the far left one did not change when I unplugged it. So I replaced the injector and o-rings. Did not fix. Replaced spark plugs. Did not fix. Went to AutoZone and found codes P0303 and P0420. Car does not use oil at all even with 170,000 miles. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Jason.

Have #3 injector electrical pulse checked using a noid light, have the compression checked in the cylinder. Hook up a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum source, if its steady mechanically it should be good. If it bounces something such as a valve is bad. fix the P0303 problem first. its probably causing the P0420 cat code

P0303 is a Cylinder 3 Misfire, and P0420 is Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold.

  • The misfire is probably due to faulty Spark Plug Wires, or faulty Ignition Coil.
  • The Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold could be a clogged Catalytic Converter, or a Faulty O2 Sensor after the Catalytic Converter. You should have 2 O2 Sensors, 1 that checks the Air/Fuel Ratio at the Manifold, and 1 that checks the condition of your Catalytic Converter, after the Catalytic Converter on the Exhaust. More than likely this code is coming up because of the misfire situation.
What is the Year, Make and Model of the vehicle you are working on? I would start by fixing the misfire, and then clear the ECM to see if the code/s come back.

Hi, have you tried swapping the ignition wires? If it isn't the injector or plugs, it may be the wire or the valves. If swapping wires doesn't work, run a compression test.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6715318-causes_gasoline_engine_misfires . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

By the way, the code 420 may be caused by the misfire, so don't worry about that unless the code doesn't clear after fixing the misfire.

96 olds lss had fuel pump replaced wont stay started long sputter spits ect.

You better find a different mechanic . Before calling a bad fuel pump ,did he do fuel pressure test ? Did he test the electrical circuit ? Did he check mass air flow sensor ,injectors , fuel regulator , engine senors ? How many miles on the vehicle , is the engine in good shape ? Timing chain ?

Car sputtering

Fuel injectors should be next on your list of things to check and replace. You might also check your oil to see if it has turned any abnormal color. This will let you know if you have a liquid leak in the engine. When you removed the old spark plugs were any of them wet?

Based on the condition of the plugs it sounds like its running rich. I almost wonder if someone sold you the wrong pumps and you have too much pressure or something.

Could also very well be whacked injectors. I am thinking it may even be a timing issue...

Could be a Mass Air Flow sensor going bad, or it could be a computer that isn't firing all of the fuel injectors when needed.

Test the Mass Air Flow sensor by idling the car, in Park, and hitting the intake tube that has the Mass Air Flow sensor integrated into it. If the car stalls, you found the problem, the MAF sensor.

Good luck on this repair.
