Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

4 Answers

1998 Jetta- started hearing a clicking noise by the stearing column then things started going on and off. First the fan would only work occasionaly, then it went completely out as did the cruise control and the low beam lights. Funny thing, the fan comes on when the high beams are on. So we are thinking it is a relay, but can't figure out which one is bad. We tried replacing the #18 but that wasn't it. We haven't been able to find a diagram showing which functions are controlled by each of the relays.

My email is lilshavers@aol.com- Just a little more information, we checked all the grounding wires and everything there was okay. Also, the windshield wipers are out as well and actually everything comes back on when the high beams are clicked on. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Any idea which relay # this would be on the 1998 Jetta GLX? We have seen multiple diagrams but none that label the relays to match what the relay numbers are in this car.

We will take a look inside the column. The photo you uploaded was of the back of a watch rather than the fuse/relays ?

The Haynes or Chilton's Repair Manual on your vehicle will show those in the diagrams section. Narrow your focus to the relays located around the steering column, assuming that is where the sound came from. It is rare but occasionally a wiring harness will come loose and that will give you the problems you are having. Normally when this happens it is due to an alarm installer not making sure they got wires tied back properly when they installed the starter kill switch in the main ignition harness.

Hello,
Sounds to me like the problem may lye inside the cluster (dash panel). I am inclined to think the problem lies in the cluster not so much a relay. I will post a picture of the under the hood fuse panel and the relay panel ( relay's 13-24 top of photo) and a description of the functions of each fuse/relay for you as well.

    Hello Heidi,

I will answer any question you have here. I am not permitted to go outside of FixYa, sorry. So you say when your high beam is on everything works? So the clicking is perhaps coming from inside the steering column rather than inside the cluster. I say this because that is where the high beam switch is. In this case you will need to remove the cover to the column and look first for loose wires or cold soldier joints or a disconnected wire. Your assembly may be failing in the steering column.

I have no idea how that got there. I don't even have that pic on my PC. It was the fuse diagram last night. I will upload the diagram again. Sorry about that.

PROBLEM COULD BE IN THE INDICATOR RELAY AND HAZARD SWITCH SINCE HEAD LIGHTS SWITCH SHARES SAME CIRCUIT. I AM THINKING ABOUT THAT WHEN YOU SAY YOU HAVE LOW BEAM LIGHT PROBLEMS ALSO

1998 Jetta- started hearing a - johnjnail_3.tif send me your e-mail and i will send you a picture of the relay center with a locating legend, but relay #4 load limiting relay would be the best guess, but could also be a power supply problem, like the ignition switch.

Have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that makes creaking noise in stearing wheel , not so much when cold but definitely when it is hot

Sometimes the boot or the rubber at the base of the steering column will make that type of noise. To help eliminate it, rule it out or identify it spray some silicone spray on both sides of the boot/rubber inside and outside.

Steering wheel clicks on 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon

steering column bearing sounds like a worn out steering column... jack the front wheels off the ground both sides relieve load on steering wheel to see if it lessens the amount of feel and noise, if it does it shoud be the column bearing, replace bearings or complete column,,, also try with the wheels off the ground and safely supported to manualy steer the wheels by hand and see if you feel in roughness or hear any noises, should some minor resistance but be smooth in it movement if everything suspension and steering component wise is in good working condition... please rate my help.. thanks...

Listen for a click from under the steering column when you turn the key on. If you hear no electrical click then your ignition switch could be bad. If you hear an electrical click the you starter soleniod is bad.

Blower fan will not come on dodge ram 1500

This could be a few things. First check to make sure that your fan relay is still good. (This will be in your control panel under your hood) Otherwise, your fan switch could be out. Try removing the control panel and the switch that attaches to behind the fan control knob and replace with a new one. Lastly, if your fan works on "high" but not for "low" or "medium" then it is most likely your blower resistor module. If I remember correctly the resistor is located behind the glove compartment. Let me know how it goes and if you need some more help. Good luck!
