Question about 2003 Ford Focus

Open Question

2003 Ford Focus ZTW wagon liftgate. LIftgate unlatches unexpectedly when driving and even parked without the engine running. It happened one night enough to drain the battery. At that time the FOB and the cabin switch worked to unlatch. Now only the FOB will unlatch. Have removed the power wire from the latch motor for driving safety and for saving the battery while parked. Think it is the CLM circuitry. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Seatbelt Unlatches

This sounds like something broken in the latch. Do yourself a favor. Before it comes unlatched in an accident, go to your local dealer and get a replacement latch ASAP. That is one device in a car you shouldn't ever have to question. If it doesn't work right, replace it.

SOURCE: Need to remove interior panel of Ford Windstar liftgate

Get a trim panel removal tool at an autoparts store. It's a thin metal piece that slides between the panel and framework where the plastic clips hold the panel on. Slide it in at each clip....and pop each one off. There may be some trim screws also.

SOURCE: ford focus wiring

same thing happened to us.  My wife came home and said the rear brake lights were stuck on so I assumed it was the brake switch...not so. Took car for a ride and noticed rear wiper did not work and when I hit the brake the rear hatched opened and door locks blew out.  I started by looking at the wires in the gromet above the hatch and found almost all the wires were bare.  Therefore power was jumping  the bare wires and traveling back down the third break light and to the rear brake lights and visa versa.. a very dangerous situation.  The best that I can tell is the wires are so short in length that they pull and chafe every time you open and close the hatch...very poor design...   Note: we bought our vehicle brand new and some of the wires had electrical tape on them....seems mickey moused.

How do I reset lift gate on 2004 lincoln navigator. It doesn't open or close anymore with the remote

Maybe your key fob needs a new battery !
Power Liftgate Initialization

NOTE:If the power liftgate system is turned OFF in the message center, the system cannot be activated with any switches or with the liftgate handle. The system will need to be turned ON for any power operation to occur.

NOTE:The power liftgate may not operate under the following conditions:

  • a low voltage or dead battery.
  • a disconnected battery
  • a power liftgate that has been left open for more than six hours.
  • a power liftgate that has been manually closed and left ajar.
If any of these conditions has occurred, the power liftgate must be reset.
  1. Manually close and fully latch the power liftgate.
  1. NOTE:If the power liftgate does not open during this step, refer to the symptom chart to diagnose the power liftgate for no operation.
Power open the power liftgate by using the keyfob or overhead console switch.
  1. Once the power liftgate is fully open, close the power liftgate by using the keyfob or overhead console switch.
This system can also set DTC'S

Rear liftgate on wagon will not open with remote or dash release. Can't find a fuse that is for the liftgate. Will open with key.

Hi,

This model actually had a recall on the lift gate actuators as they did give problems. The best why to see if it is the actuator or the wiring is to check for power to the lift gate actuator which is in the liftgate, and try to use the remote etc to see if there is power to it.

If there is power to the actuator then you will need to replace the actuator.

Thanks

More than likely, your starter has gone out. If the battery is fully charged and its not even turning over, that is what i would start with.
