Is it running for a few seconds while the engine is running and stopping? If this is happening just when the key is turned on with the engine not running the fuel system is supposed to be doin this. When you first turn your key on your fuel pump is going to turn on for a few seconds to pressurize the system then the relay shuts it off.

I had the same problem and took it into a shop where they found that the plastic housing was leaking so the pump would not generate any presure. They told me that when they replace a fuel pump that they always do the whole unit not just the pump. I had done just the pump my self and had to lern the hard way.

1998 ford taurus will not start without using starter fluid

I would check fuel pressure before and after you crank the engine.
The pump gets power for 3 seconds during startup - if the fuel pressure has leaked down you would have to crank the engine until the oil pressure came up to get the pump to power up again.

I have a 1998 Dodge Durango 5.2L and it takes a couple times of turning the key and then i let it sit for a second and then it starts. Why would this be

Sounds like the pump relay is not working correctly, or you are loosing fuel pressure thru the check valve in the pump.
If the pump runs when you turn the key on, I would check fuel pressure with a gauge before and after trying to start the engine.
The check valve in the pump prevents the pressure from leaking back into the gas tank when the engine is off.

When i stop for a couple minutes my taurus might not start,if i wait 15min. it starts and runs fine.can fuel pumps get weak or do they just stop working.

check your fuel pump relay. when the pump itself goes out they typically just go out. but the relay can cause intermittent issues

Fuel pump works but no fuel in the fuel rail

can you hear the fuel pump run for 5 seconds when you turn the key to "ON"? Then it stops running until you turn the key to start. Do you have 40 PSI at the fuel rail?

Have you changed the fuel filter?

Stalls when coming to a stop

Mine stalled when I stopped and it was the Idle Speed Motor. If it only stalls when you stop, I would check that before messing with the fuel filter or pump.

Engine stalls, then runs after pressing accelerator

If you were low on gas at the time, it could have shifted the fuel in the tank when you turned. The engine can stall for a couple of seconds and then restart as the fuel pump primes again.

1998 dodge stratus stopped running going down the road now turns over but won't start new plugs and wires and coil

if you can't hear the fuel pump cut in for 2 or 3 seconds when you first turn the key to the "run" position, that will be the problem. The pump is inside the gas tank. You should be able to hear it hum for a couple of seconds. If not, make sure there is power to it. If it has power, but doesn't work... remove and replace.
If you can hear it, try the fuel filter. It may be completely plugged.
Check for spark if you haven't already.
