Question about 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My mechanic says that the reason why my 1997 jeep grand cherokee will start an stay on for only 10 seconds is because i need to have the dealership unlock the anti theft system

I find that to be doubtful but would contact the dealer about how exactly that antitheft system works. In most antitheft systems the vehicle will start at all, or even turn over like it may try to start. If it runs but dies out I would be looking at something more like vacuum leaks, timing, idle air control or possibly the alternator though that seems unlikely.

    I had the same problem as you. Try this, it worked for me:

    1st lock the doors
    2nd unlock the pasenger side door with the key
    3rd unlock driver door with the key

    That should reset the theft system and let it run normally.

You check the fuel pressure while the engine is running or cranking if it won't start.Should not go up or down drastically.Should stay within 10 lbs. variance. don-ohio

This problem is frecuently in this models, check the levels and reset your ECU.

If the problem stay there, just change your coolant sensor.

Check Engine Light is Staying On


I agree with timmyb187. The dealership will test for codes and see exactly what sensor might be putting that light on. Under the bumper are sensors for the airbag. There could be a harness that got cut because of the accident.
