Question about 1997 Honda Civic

My 1997 honda civic keeps running hot. but if i turn on the heat it cool down for a little while, also when it hot the reservoir is full. What could be wrong?

Your not getting enough circulation in th radiator,, sounds like a clogged radiator,replace it buy a brand new one,its not worth-it to ruin an ENGINE;; GOOD LUCK!!!!

Overheating when I sit idle.


Over heating the engine is a serious concern. With the hood raised you should hear the motorized fan turn on just behind the radiator as the engine requires additional cooling.. If you look in from the rear of the radiator you should see the fan blades.

This electric powered motor operates on a thermostat and when the engine temperature rises this fan should come on. I'm assuming from your description that when driving and air is flowing through the radiator as the car travels the engine is nor overheating.

Check fan motor thermostat, check fan motor and check wiring.

So I have a honda civic 1998 ex, and my fuel meter is jumping up and down , sometime itll be on empty and itll be half way, how do i change that? and im not sure if its normal but every time i pour coolant...


It is normal for the reservoir to get more water after the car has been running as the water expands when hot and runs out to the reservoir. However when the engine cools down the excess water in the reservoir should be drawn back into the radiator.. have a pressure test done on the cooling system to check for leaks. Have a compression test done to check for head gasket and cracked head problems. Get the fan to work as that may be why you are putting more water in the reservoir because the engine is close to over heating.. As to the fuel gauge I would replace the tank sender unit.

Air pockets in radiator


Air can be purged. While your engine is cool remove radiator and reservoir caps. Place funnel in radiator. Turn heat to the highest position and start vehicle. Add coolant to radiator as needed while vehicle warms up. You should see bubbles coming out of radiator. Fill reservoir to between cold and hot fill lines. Replace caps when bubbling stops but before coolant temperature reaches normal operating temperature. Never remove the radiator cap until engine has fully cooled down.

Did you flush the radiator when you replaced thermostat too? Sounds like it's clogged and the coolant is not circulating as it should. It probably needs to be rodded out or replaced by now.
Check your cooling fans for proper operation. Make sure the outside of the radiator & condensor are clean, and not full of bugs & debris...I hope this helps.

Does the 1997 honda civic have an air lock preventor Every morning I have to throw the built up coolant back into the radiator from the auxiliary container. When I open the radiator, the air belches...

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that small animals and domestic pets are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze and may attempt to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or from puddles on the ground. This can be fatal if ingested in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused until it becomes contaminated or several years old. To avoid injuries from scalding fluid and steam, DO NOT remove the radiator cap while the engine is running or if the engine or radiator is still hot.
  1. Before draining the cooling system, place the heater's temperature selector to the full WARM position while the engine is running.
  2. Turn the engine off before it gets hot and the system builds pressure.
  3. Make sure the engine is still cool and the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  4. Remove and drain the reservoir recovery tank.
  5. Place a fluid catch pan under the radiator. Turn the radiator draincock counterclockwise to open, then allow the coolant to drain.
  6. Remove the radiator cap by performing the following:
    1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detent.
    2. If any residual pressure is present, WAIT until the hissing stops.
    3. After the hissing noise has ceased, press down on the cap and continue rotating it counterclockwise to remove it.
  7. Allow the coolant to drain completely from the vehicle.
  8. Close the radiator draincock. NOTE: When filling the cooling system, be careful not to spill any coolant on the drive belts or alternator. To refill:
  9. Make sure the heater temperature is placed in the full hot position.
  10. Open the bleed screw on the thermostat housing.
  11. Install the reservoir recovery tank and using a 50/50 mixture of the recommended antifreeze and clean water, fill the cooling system reservoir tank to the FULL mark. WARNING
    If any coolant is spilled on a painted surface, wipe it up immediately.
  12. Begin filling the radiator with the 50/50 mixture of coolant. Watch for air being released from the open the bleed screw on the thermostat housing. Once coolant mixture begins to steadily flow through the bleeder, close the bleeder.
  13. Continue to fill the radiator until the radiator is full.
  14. Start the engine and allow the engine to run until the cooling fans operate two times, making sure to top off the system as the fluid level drops.
  15. After the cooling fan has run for the second time, top off the system as necessary, then install the radiator cap.
  16. Allow the engine to run and inspect the cooling system for leaks.

Most likely you have a bad thermostat is stuck and not letting coolant to flow to your radiator. check your coolant level if is normal replace the thermostat NOTE: if you live air pockets on your cooling system then also cause to over head when adding new coolant open the bleeder valve if you cant find it just add coolant whit the engine running when the new thermostat open will release the air pocket and you will see a sudden drop of you coolant level, then add more on till the radiator is full again. never drive your car for long is your engine is over heating that will cause a blown head gasket and mayor repairs. if your on the street and just notice than your car is over heating turn your A/C off set it on heating maximum fan max heat and of coarse roll down all your windows. it be real hot for you but that will save your engine. the heater core on your car is like a baby radiator and bypass the engine thermostat that will help to cooled down a lot . hope this help you and good luck.
