Question about 2002 Ford Explorer
Have it replaced immediately. The longer you wait the larger the repair and cost. You also run the risk of the engine dying when you least expect it. You wouldn't want that if your in a rush to get somewhere or if need to drive because of a sudden emergency.
I know the repair is not cheap, but it has to be done. I'd suggest you use a reliable mechanic rather than a dealer service center. The dealers typically charge as much as 20% more than the average repair cost.

Ford does not utilize a belt timing in its motor on explorers. they use a chain which is either working or its not. if it is indeed bad you most likely will have a no start situation. if it does start and run your performance will be hindered by at least half. if you can still drive this vehicle at highway speeds and can accelerate well then I would get a second opinion as to what the problem is. if you are suffering from these symptoms then you are looking at 7 hours of labor from a dealer up to 18 hours depending which timing chain is broken. there is a possibility of one of your cams being broken too. either way it will require pulling the motor. the only way to tell is to do a compression test of your cylinders. test 2 cylinders per side if there is a huge difference in psi from one side to the other then the side with the lower psi is the trouble side. in that case pulling the cylinder head for closer inspection will be required to diagnose if it has a broken cam etc. have fun and good luck. mechanic 10 years experience. plus personal experience with my own 02 explorer with timing chain issue. would recommend ditching fords altogether. that is unless you buy a mustang. they are the only car ford puts money into. I have moved on from being a \'ford\' guy after my experiences as a mechanic. if you want to buy better american products try chrysler.
