Question about 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

Hi, The cooling fan doesn't engage when the A/C is turned on. So the compressor just turns on then off again. The charge appears to be fine - checked with gauge and it goes up to 300 + for a second then to the low end rapidly - Where are the fuses in the engine area? if that's what I want to be looking at Thanks, Charlie

Thanks for your answer. I will be at Chrysler Mon afternoon to verify both my description and your answer. You see, the radiator fan does not turn on when I turn on the AC. This I was told by the service adviser, is the likely problem. I was hopping to find out where the engine fuse box and fan relays are located before I took the car to spend all that money but I'm finding that question is not as easy to get answered as I would have thought. I'm going to have another go at it in a few minutes-
I'll let ya know. Thanks again.

No you need a new pressure switch in teh AC circuit and for this the gas will need to be removed by a special machine then re-gassed to the correct weight after the switch has been changed

Compressor Clutch disengages and Radiator Fan starts to run loudly

The radiator fan should turn on when the a/c clutch engages as this is designed to increase the cooling of the engine as the a/c increases the engine loading. But the compressor clutch should stay engaged as long as there is need for cooling, and disengage/re-engage as the temperature control calls for cool air. The radiator fan will shut off IF the engine temperature is cool enough to do so, as it is regulated by heat, as well as the A/c override.

If your air conditioning is not cooling the car and the clutch is simply disengaging prematurely, have the temperature control and relay checked for proper operation. Also have the refrigerant level checked to assure there is adequate refrigerant in the system and no leaks. My first bet would be the relay or the thermostatic temperature control under the dash.

No electrical power to AC Compressor. The switch light comes on in car when AC power button is turned on.

  1. Check if air blows with the fan setting turned to high.
  2. Check that the radiator cooling fan engages when the A/C button is pressed.
  3. Locate the compressor.
  4. Turn on the A/C.
  5. Check if the compressor's clutch has been engaged.
  6. If the clutch engages, the fault is elsewhere.
  7. If the clutch does not engage, check for power to the clutch.
These steps might help find the problem.

Is the switch that turns on cooling fans the same switch that turns on the air compressor i just replaced compressor and other parts and had it vacumed out ,oiled and recharged . and compressor wont

possible you have a bad low or high pressure switch on a/c system bad causing compressor not to engage, find switchs and jump across wires and see if compressor engages

Compressor and fans do not turn on until rev engine

I passed this question the first time I read it, so I will take a stab at it now.
The fans don't come on until the compressor has pumped the freon pressure up to say 150 or 200 psi. And the compressor clutch has to have voltage to engage the clutch.
I wonder if the clutch is going and needs 14 volts instead of 12 to engage ? Or the relay that powers the clutch ?
Speeding up the engine would increase voltage from the alternator.
This is assuming the serpentine belt is tight and everything else is working correctly.
I think I would swap the relay with another and put a meter on that circuit to the ac clutch to see what it takes to engage it.

Hi, The air con in my 2003 Audi A6 1.9 tdi 130 is blowing warm air the air con rad is fully gassed and all fuses are ok . Thanks in advance for any advice on how to fix

The only other thing then would be if the compressor is turning, engaging, and the cooling fan working properly. You should either be able to see the compressor clutch engage, as the switch is energized, or at least hear it click loudly when the switch is energized. If it is not, then there are sensors for the low pressure/high pressure line to tell the compressor when to function, that also have to be checked.

As the engine runs with the compressor turning, one line should be hot/warm, the othe,r (larger diameter hose) should be cool/cold, if the system is working properly.

If the compressor is turning when you have the A/C turned on, then see if the cooling fan is running as well. It must run to remove the heat and cause the process to function properly.

Good luck!

I had my 1997 kia sportage air con regassed 2 weeks ago, they found a leak and fixed it. When my air con is on, the air blowing from the vents is not cold. What could be the problem?

Make sure the compressor clutch is engaging by watching whether it spins with the fan belt moving when the engine is on (don't touch it). If the compressor doesn't have its clutch turn when the engine is on, the a/c may have lost its charge again. Take back to dealer to have it checked out, again.

2004 jeep grand cherokee a/c compressor clutch cycles on and off. a/c works fine when clutch is engaged.

Hi,
Looks like the a/c compressors relay is malfunctioning. Replace the relay with a similar one.
Hope that helps you out!

A/c compressor won't engage and the cooling fan not operating

I have the same car. The cooling fan activates at 227F. Only one fan will engage at this temp, the other one[closer to the A/C compressor] won't engage unless the A/C is working. Try charging the system with half a can of refrig. It'll be tough retrofitting to R-134A, the LOW PRESSURE connector is under the air box pointing sideways about an inch from a large bracket. Try and find a 90 degree adapter of some type and go from there.

Are you fully charged though? If you don't have a full charge the clutch will not kick in.
