Sounds like you might have some water in your tank "BAD GAS", Try a bottle of HEAT and pour into tanl and drive a few day's, This should help it. When weather warms most os the gas stations have water that gets into there tank. If this don't work you might check engine for vacume leaks, good luck to you.

I guess its not so much a back fire but bad misfire. will not go up a hill keeps lurching ahead under the misfire...

Often it takes a load to bring out the misfire like hard acceleration or climbing a hill, did you check the spark plug boots on the coils for signs of burning or other damage of any kind.

1995 S-10, when going uphill or accelerating my AC blows out the defrosters when backing off it comes out the vents again

It is almost certainly due the drop in manifold vacuum when climbing hills or accelerating. Back in my youth windshield wipers stopped when you stepped on the gas.

2002 Santa Fe 127174 miles. On hills car slows dwn, rpm is climbing, speed is droping. on steep hills from a dead stop rpm's are 4,000 speed is just below 20mph. have had the fluid flushed twice.

sounds like your transmission is going bad fast. get it checked asap to see if it can still be saved. aamco will take a look at it. if its completely bad, then getting a new transmission might be cheaper than getting the current one fixed so look into that!!

What is the proper way of using overdrive, how and when you have to use it?

If you are not climbing steep hills or towing, leave it on all the time. Turn it off for low speed/high strain driving like towing, climbing and off-roading.

i hope this helps

Missing and backfiring during acceleration and climbing hills.

Could be vapor lock in the fuel system. Next time it does this, stop and try removing the fuel filler cap... Hope this helps...;-)

Car lurches and bucks, rpms erratic on acceleration on hills

You could have any of these problems:
1) vacuum leak- broken air hose or disconnected air hose.
2) water in the gasoline- add a water remover to you gas tank.
3) bad or disconnected spark plug wire(s).
If this were my Forester, I'd take it to a mechanic who has a electronic engine tester..

Jetta will not accelerate up inclines.

good chance you have a clogged cat converter ...with engine running have someone rev engine and see how much flow you have out tail pipe. also if you hear the sound of something rattling inside exhaust that is another tell tale sign
