Question about 1992 Toyota Pickup
The check engine light is coming on to letyou know that the engine control computer has stored a fault code that will lead you to the problem and ultimately, the fix - providing it is properly diagnosed. Replacing parts without properly diagnosing the engine control system can be EXTREMELY expensive!
From the symptoms you are describing, it sounds like you may have a problem with an engine coolant temperature sensor.... But I would still have this properly diagnosed before running out and buying a new sensor.

I had the same issue with my 1998 SR5 it ended up being the EGR valve. The dealership rebuilt the whole motor and the same issue after install and it was the EGR valve.
