Question about Nissan Altima

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5, the steering has become harder to turn in the last few months. The fluid level is good, is my power steering pump gone? Or could it be steering rack? Is it easy to check if its one or the other?

You may need the lower steering shaft. pretty common issue with those. they are starting to pop up more and more now that those cars are getting older (2002 - 2006) models. there is a u-jiont built into the lower steering shaft. those get tight and cause hard steering. have it checked. its the piece that connects to the steering rack and the upper steering column.

91 Nissan altima bleed air power steering

If the power steering pump is a pressure/oil based unit then open the lid of the power steering pump and fill to the top. with the engine working turn the steering from lock to lock for a few minutes, two to three should be enough. Simultaneously, keep an eye on the fluid level so that it does not drop too

Why does my Steering whine and difficult to turn?

Power steering pump. If the gears in the pump become worn or "galled" the pump will whine and it will be harder to steer until the pump is replaced. **Check the power steering fluid level first. If it's low add to the correct amount. This may help if it's just low on fluid. If this doesn't help it is probably new pump time.

When idling my almera 55 plate, if you turn the steering it makes a whirring noise, both ways, is this belt or steering fluid levels, or what else, not to good on modern cars so not sure where to start....

I would start by checking the fluid. I would than turn my eyes to the pump its self. I would not think it was the belt because that would make sound on start up and the power steering would be stiff.

Noise fron tire nissan altima

Are you check the power steering fluid? If it's a moaning sound, when you're turning the wheel, you're either low on power steering fluid, your pump is getting weak or (most likely) your rack and pinion steering pump is getting weak.

Power steering

Sounds like your pressure needs to be checked for your power steering pump or maybe if that is ok the spool valve seals inside your rack are worn and letting fluid past under pressure.

Is there a way to verify if pump pressure is enogh

Well, there is no guage to check power st. pressure, so you dont have to worry about that..Now if your steering feels kind of tight, all you can do is check the following..
1. Make sure your level is ok, and you have the right
type of power st. fluid in the resivor.
2. Make sure your front tires ( well all ) have the
proper psi. in them, because low front tires, will
make the steering a lillte harder...
3. And make sure the power st. belt is good an
tight, However you should have only one belt on
there, well depending on what motor you have, you
may have two. But either way, make sure its
4. If all that is good, then you may need to replace
your power st. pump...

Well i hope this helps you, and Goodluck, and Keep Me Posted...

My steering wheel in a nissan altima is gering hard

If your steering is getting hard to turn, there are a few easy things to check before you assume the worst.. Open the hood and check to see if your power steering pump reservoir is full of fluid and the belt is on and tight. If these all look good, you most likely have some friction or binding in your steering rack and pinion assembly, and that is replaced as an entire unit.

Noisy power steering on cold start goes away when warm

what type of noise ? if it is squeeling, check the level of power steering fluid, after you are sure the level is up , turn the steering wheel as far as it will go one way and hold it there for a couple seconds... then turn it all the way the other way. that will remove any air in the system.
