Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

1 Answer

My 98 cutless won't take gas sometimes. I think it's some sort of plug that keeps people from syphiling gas and the plug inside the tank has pulled up. Some times I can leave the cap off the tank and let it sit a few hours and then it'll take gas again... or not. Any ideas?

The only thing in the gas filler tube is the flapper that swings out of the way when the gas nossel is inserted. The problem is the setting on the pump nossel set to low [ this is set by the company-ies that services the pumps, try moving ths nossel a little bit up in the filler.
If you discribing a problem with the engine responding to the pedal, then it could be anything from a party clogged fuel filter, to a blocked vent.

I've already replaced the filler tube and it didn't fix it. I traced the line with a snake and nothing is clogged, and I ripped the flap out. I'm not sure if a low flow pump will let it accept gas, because it won't even take gas from a gas can. Oh- and the vents have been cleaned out. They aren't clogged.

The only other thing I can think of is that you have a inner wall of the filler hose collaped [ the part that connects the filler pipe to the tank ] , this wouldn't give any resistance to snaking.

Problem with dispensing gasoline into Dodge truck at a normal rate.

You have not mentioned the year or model of the truck.
I sort of hope it is older!
If so, you may have a mud dauber (wasp) nest in the air pipe.
There is a steel pipe that goes from the top of the gas tank to the outside air, usually near or inside the gas fill pipe.
If this pipe gets plugged, for any reason, it will cause the gas to refuse to go it.
You may also try several different gas stations, as I had a 1993 with the same problem, and sometimes it is the gas hose nozzle.
God bless your efforts.

Does the low fuel light on a 1997 oldsmobile cutless supreme have a fuse

All of the warning lights are on the same circuit for power. The low fuel light gets a ground from the logic board inside the instrument cluster and from the gas tank sending unit.

Key won't open trunk for a 95 oldsmobile cutless supreme

Hi,
Do the rear seats fold down? If so, crawl in there may be a lever/latch to open the trunk from inside.

Take the car to a locksmith and they can fix the lock.

My 1988 dodge ram custom 50 I think is having fuel pump problems. It chokes going mainly up hills. or could it be the fuel filter?

There are fuel lines inside the gas tank. Over time they can rust causing them to break or leak. You have one of two options, first you can pull the tank and replace the line. The second option is to keep the gas tank fuel level above the leak. And the fact that this happens mainly when going up a hill, suggests the leak is lower in the tank. All the gas shifts to the rear of the tank and exposes the leak. NOTE: The leak is probably just above the level you usually keep the tank filled to. So if you keep it at 1/4 that's where you'll find it etc....

I have a 98 subaru lagacy wagon. It hestitates

My 98 Subaru has this same problem. I changed the filter and had the injectors cleaned and flow checked. I think that as the electric fuel pump (that is on the sender unit that is in the fuel tank) begins to wear out, the output of the pump drops off and can't keep up with engine demand during exceleration. I think this is why the car is hard to start with only a partially filled fuel tank. When the tank is not full, the pump is not "helped" by the weight (head pressure) of the fuel in the tank. I may be crazy. I will be changing this pump soon. I found one at my local Auto Value in stock for $130.00. Be glad you have a Subaru because you can take the sender unit out of the tank from inside the car. Other manufacturers make you remove the tank.

Let me know if you have any new developments.

1988 ford ranger 4 speed v6 problems keeping it running.

Fuel filter? There's also a filter on the suction intake inside the gas tank, it can get plugged up. I'd definitely try the filter if you haven't. Good luck. Have you checked the fuel psi coming from the tank? If it's fuel injection, it should be pretty high, 55 - 60 psi. Let me know if I can help.

My 98 dodge caravan has a loss of power and dies when stopping

Filter is mounted directly above the pump module on top of the fuel tank. You may have to drop it down a little bit to change it. Also check the fuel pressure with a good gauge while it's running poorly and see if it's out of spec.

1986 toyota camary. sat for 2 to 3 years and the

best bet would be to drop the tank and clean it out
they tend to get rust inside the tank when they sit this long if you decide to drop the tank and find rust inside take a 3 ft piece of heavy chain and shake it around inside the tank to loosen all the rust and clean the rust out really well before putting the tank back in

1999 Pontiac Grand Am Fuel Problems

The gas guage has a sending unit in the tank attached to the pump, there is a small circuit board on it that has smal"fingers" that send the signal to the guage. These get worn off and thus sends a false reading to the gas guage in the dash. The gas tank must be removed and a new unit put in to solve the problem. I had to do this repair to mine. As for the gas issue, just try pulling the nozzle back out of the filler neck when putting gas in, sometimes the overflow tube gets plugged up and won't allow the air to escape as the gas goes in the tank, making the gas pump think the car is full, pulling the nozzle will allow the air to escape. Hope this helps.
