Question about Mazda MPV

Air being blown through reservoir w/ cap off. Sounds like a head gasket. How can I tell which head gasket? Do the gasket sealants work? Thanks,

Sounds more like a bad valve or vacuum leak is it using oil?

I think the head gasket has blown again. If the head was not skimmed correctly or installed correctly it will blown the gasket again. The fact that the water is bubbling in the reservoir but the gauge staying in the middle means the water is not actually boiling but venting air/gas from the cylinders to the water reservoir. Check for a whitish grey substance in the inside of the oil filler cap indicating water getting into the engine oil. Also with start up - the engine will misfire badly but improve after a while. Take it back to the mechanic as he should guarantee his workmanship.

Sounds to me like the head gasket is blown, but there may be sealant in the system which is making it intermittently leak antifreeze into the cylinders.

A bad cylinder head gasket will also cause a compromise in compression, which will cause a lack of power.

Time to overhaul or replace the engine's head gasket, or replace the engine with one that doesn't have a blown head gasket.

this sounds like a blown head gasket its poped across the oil way thats why water is in the oil best get it fixed fast as the water in the oil will wreck the engines bearings very fast,,,

Often (but not always), a blown head gasket will also cause deposit of water on a piece of cardboard held an inch from the tailpipe output while the engine is running (when this is happening, it is likely that the catalytic converter has been ruined and the muffler will corrode in short order as well).

Sometimes drops of water will be seen dropping from the end of the tailpipe. Another clue: turn on the heater; often when the head gasket is blown an odor of antifreeze and synthetic rubber will emanate from the heater vents.
Many of the symptoms of blown head gasket can be caused by some other problem in the cooling system, without the head gasket being damaged. Conversely, other problems with the cooling system can cause a blown head gasket and/or warped head.

When checking for a blown head gasket, one of the most common tell-tale signs is a milky-gray ring around your oil cap. When coolant enters the engine oil through a crack in the head or through a blown gasket, it evaporates and leaves a milky ring around the oil cap. Another easy way to tell is to check your oil dipstick. Change your oil and pull out the dipstick. Make sure that you take note of how far up the dipstick the oil is. Top off your cooling system and fill your cooling reservoir to the top. Screw radiator cap back on and start engine. Run engine for about 20-30 mins. or until it reaches normal operating temperature. Allow engine to cool (engine must cool completely to get accurate oil reading!!). Check oil dipstick again. If the oil has a watery appearance and has risen noticeably up the dipstick, the you probably have a blown head gasket or a warped head. Also look for a dripping, sweet-smelling liquid coming out of your tailpipe. Any of the above symptoms could be the result of a blown head gasket. The easiest way to tell is with a compression meter. This replaces the spark plug and lets you know what compression each cylinder is running at. If your compression is abnormally low, then you have a blown head gasket or a warped head. (note: consult repair manual for appropriate compression of each cylinder.)

Yes it can be the head gasket,one way to tell,is make sure the engine is cold,like in the morning.Take the rad.cap off,add water until full.Turn over the engine and let run,while looking at the opening(where the cap goes).Is the water coming out like really fast,maybe as much as a fountain?If so,then it is a head,or head gasket.If you would like to bleed system of air I can tell you how.If there is air in the cooling system,it will run hot.With it cold,or cool,not hot or real warm,fill the reservoir with water up to 3/4 full,over the fill mark.Fill the radiator full,and replace radiator cap,and reservoir cap.Make sure the hose from the reservoir to the radiator is in good shape,no holes or crimped anywhere.start the engine with the ac off.At this point the cooling fans should not be on.There not supposed to be on unless you straight wired them.Before the fans come on by themselves,or the vehicle runs hot,and right before not to soon,cut the car off.Go in the house and get on computer for about 30 to 40 minutes,and go back out side and check the water level in the reservoir.Is it down?if so add more water and repeat process until engine runs at normal temp.The fans should come on,and go off on there own,with the ac off.Let me know the out come.

Have oil in my radiator fluid reservoir tank (1996 v6 3.8)


Twice in two years now my Saab 9-5 has had a pin-hole in the oil cooler, which has caused oil to flow into the reservoir. A way to tell is if coolant/oil is coming out of the reservoir cap. The reservoir cap is rated for the pressure of the coolant system, which is significantly lower than the oil pressure. When there is a hole in the oil cooler, oil will be forced out at relatively high pressures, causing the reservoir to fill and then over pressurize and spill out of the cap.

Running hot will cause head gasget to fail. Or if head is not torqued properly, or a faulty head gasget. Pressure in cooling system means, blown head gasget or cracked head.

2004 Sierra 5.3 l - Engine coolant blowing out of reservoir


this was caused by the cap being gone, there is zero doubt of this, I hope u have not damaged the cylinder head gaskets, time will tell.
