It can, but that will not cause the inability for the vehicle to idle. Check your TPS-throttle position sensor.

The 'slop' in cable shouldn't be the problem as they have a base idle set,it is usually there as the cable is set to provide full open throttle when the pedal is fully to the floor without putting strain on the cable by being too tight. Is the check engine light up?if so there will be a sensor fault code that needs to be downloaded.
Usually poor idle and stall on later model cars is caused by dirty air mass/flow sensor in the air cleaner or ducting. Also the throttle body that the cable goes to can cause the same if dirt build up inside.Third area is the stepper motor that sets idle from cold to hot.
The first two can be cleaned with a cleaner like CRC sensor safe/air flow sensor cleaner.and a carb cleaner will work equally well on the throttle body internally.
After using cleaners the engine may start a little rough but will clear as it restores from intake being flooded.
Finally but maybe do first; check for any air/vacuum leaks, hoses split or fallen off,any sensor plugs that aren't on.
I hope this helps or get back with your findings.

85 HONDA ACCORD WONT STAY RUNNING UNLESS PUMPING GAS NOT EVEN FULL THROTLE

You have a single fuel injector in it right. Try right at the end of the gas pedal cable at the engine there is an electrical plug and a little device that goes around in a circle when the gas is mashed. That is the throttle position sensor. Try unplugging that and if there is no difference in the revving then the throttle position sensor is out. If that is not the problem, then plug your engine into a an onboard diagnostic reader. 85 is an obd1.

Engine wont start, unless I push the gas pedal and keep my foot on it.?

Could be a dirty throttle body, or a stuck idle air control valve.
Is the check engine light staying on now ?

Check TPS -Throttle Position Sensor

May be worn out

Test it --not replace-- unless it has failed a test

Also the fuel pump maybe worn out as well

Car Stops running when you take your foot of the gas

YOU HAVE A IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE BAD. THIS CONTROLS AIR MIXTURE OF AIR IN THE TROTTLE BODY. IT GETS CARBON IN THE VALVE AND MAKES IT STICKS. U NEED TO REPLACE IT. IT IS LOCATED IN UNDER THE TROTTLE WITH FOUR SCREWS IT IS A WHITE BOX LIKE SENSOR. GOOD LUCK

Withoutknowing if the check engine light is on it could be a variety of things including but not limited to the o2 sensor, throttle positioning sensor, and the MAF and MAP sensors. Best diagnosed by using an OBDII scanner to scan for codes. If no codes are present I would then check for the pressure coming from the fuel pump to make sure it is still functioning.
