I believe that, u are meaning to learn why the electric cooling fans connected to the back of the radiator. Seem to turn on intermittently or not at all. Well, depending on the driving conditions, the region u live in, an the condition of the vehicle. The preventive maintenance schedule, the amount of devotion to which that schedule was followed. Is the key to most all Vehicle problems. I believe that ur pontiac has a V6-3.1liter 4sp AT. Front-wheel drive- The cooling system on ur vehicle requires it be serviced at 100,000miles Although I would'nt recommend that large of an interval between service. It is what the Manufacture determined was efficient enough. What GM did not replicate when testing that vehicle. Are those variable consequences of ACTUAL vehicle wear an tear. It is normal for the cooling fans to start up even after you turn the engine off an park. But the fans should kick in durning operation if the tempature of the engine raises above normal operating range. Which is 140F- 210F. another factor to consider. AC usage, I recommend that the cooling system be serviced,if u don't know the last time it was serviced. GM introduced a special coolant (red)necessary for that system to function properly. If the car continues to go hot the problem is electrical.

Burning plastic smell when cold out run heater and fan inside car and out

Are you loosing radiator fluid. sometimes the heater core will rupture and you will smell burn odor. also check for strange rubbing sounds or screeching coming from the blower fan motor. or engine exhaust manifolds are hot when car is on, make sure nothing is leaning on them which will cause a burn odor. Any odor coming from outside will find it's way inside through the fresh air vents.

Unless you are in a very hot climate, with no air con working the radiator fan does not normally come on.

Check your car's exhaust pipe for moisture running out; may have a leaking Head gasket!

Car is running hot and I put a new thermostat in and water bump

make sure the radiator cooling fans are coming on. GM has also had major problems with the lower intake gaskets leaking on the V-6 engines. sometimes when refilling the cooling systems air lock can occur. run the engine until it warms up and then turn off and let it cool down, if coolant level goes down repeat this process two or three times. other causes could be clogged radiator, or worse case scenario blown head gaskets. also i have on occasion got bad thermostats from the parts store. the upper radiator hose will get very hot when the thermostat opens. run the engine and hold the upper hose and when the t-stat opens the hose will get hot. then when the cooling fan comes on hot air will rush from from the fans. if the fans come on and the air is cool then there is a circulation problem. t-stat, clogged radiator, low coolant, head gaskets. good luck.

2002 Honda Civic...The car is overheating randomly. Replaced the thermostat, and fan relays. Car runs fine and then randomly overheats with gauge going way up and then sometimes coming down.Overheating and...

RADIATOR COOLING FAN NOT RUNNING COULD BE BAD ENGINE.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS FAULTY IF COOLING FAN IS NOT TURNING ON AT SET TEMPERATURE OF 196 TO 203 DEGRESS.CHECK SEE COOLING FAN RUNNING WHEN ENGINE RUNNING HOT.IF YES FLUSH RADIATOR , FLUSH ENGINE BLOCK, HEATER CORE,REPLACE RADIATOR CAP.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM.CHECK WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP. IF COOLANT FAN DONT TURN ON 196 TO 203 DEGREES, YOU HAVE FAULTY COOLING FAN,SHORT IN FAN WIRING OR ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.IGNITION TIMING WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.

3.1 coolent fans will not come on replaced thermostat and temp sensor fans still want come on is there another temp sensor on the radiator which side

No,it sounds like you have taken the correct steps here.these 3.1 engines run a little hot, the fans will not come on until the temp reachs over three quater the way on the gauge, they are also prone to a bad temp sender, this is located on the rear head near the trany, but if its overheating and you have bleed the system then theres a problem, when i say overheating i mean the gauge goes to hot and coolant boils over and out the resivior, if this is the case then the next thing would be to have a block test done, these engine are also known for headgasket problems, this is when exhaust enters the cooling system and stops the flow causing it to overheat, a quick test to see if the fans are operating correctly and the relay also is to start the engine and then disconnect the coolant temp sensor and fans should run, if the fans turn on then have the test done, this test is done by draining coolant down a little then theres a tube that holds the fluid that sits on radiator where the cap is and if exhaust is entering then the fluid will turn yellow and this means a head or gasket problem.good day.

ELectic fans cut off and on what causes that on a 98 toyota camry

It is normal for the electric fan to cut off and on while the vehicle is running, there is a sensor in th radiator controlling the fans, switching them in when it senses the coolant temperature is too hot. The fans then run until the temperature reaches normal range again and the fans switch off. It is also normal for the fans to cut off and on with the air conditioning running. If they are coming on at any other time, such as when the engine is not up to half way on the gauge and the air con is off, there is likely a problem with the sensor or relay.

What would cause my 2002 zx2 to overheat ?

Faulty thermostat, failed water pump, inoperable radiator fan, low coolant due to leak, faulty radiator cap, leaking head gasket, low oil, major exhaust leak near front, exhaust blockage, or incorrect ignition timing. If there is crust around radiator cap, cap is leaking. How long does it take to overheat? If it runs smoothly when cool, and all fluids are at correct levels, you can rule our head gasket, radiator cap, and ignition timing. If it overheats very quickly and fluids are correct, it is probably thermostat or water pump. If it seems to do better at higher speeds, it is probably radiator fan. You can check this by allowing vehicle to run in Park with hood open. Monitor engine temp on dash. When it is at or slightly above normal running temp, radiator fan should come on. Also note exhaust sound. If it seems loud and overheats gradually, you may have a leak before the converter. If the exhaust sounds quiet, but exhaust manifold is getting extremely hot (may glow red), there is probably a blockage. There will also be OK starting and idle but poor acceleration if exhaust is partly blocked.

1997 Cadillac Deville Overheating

Yes it can be the head gasket, one way to tell,is make sure the engine is cold, like in the morning.Take the rad.cap off,add water until full.Turn over the engine and let run, while looking at the opening(where the cap goes). Is the water coming out like really fast, maybe as much as a fountain? If so,then it is a head,or head gasket. If you would like to bleed system of air I can tell you how.If there is air in the cooling system,it will run hot. With it cold,or cool, not hot or real warm, fill the reservoir with water up to 3/4 full, over the fill mark.Fill the radiator full, and replace radiator cap,and reservoir cap.Make sure the hose from the reservoir to the radiator is in good shape,no holes or crimped anywhere.start the engine with the ac off.At this point the cooling fans should not be on.There not supposed to be on unless you straight wired them. Before the fans come on by themselves,or the vehicle runs hot,and right before not to soon, cut the car off.Go in the house and get on computer for about 30 to 40 minutes, and go back out side and check the water level in the reservoir. Is it down?if so add more water and repeat process until engine runs at normal temp. The fans should come on,and go off on there own, with the ac off.Let me know the out come.
