If you car is under warranty bring it back to dealership, U joints are covered.
I could tell you how to replace the U joint or you could go buy the appropriate HAYNES REPAIR manual for your vehicle. It is picture illustrated and is very simple to use!

Ujoint


Depends on where it is located. If its on the drive shaft for the rear wheels the cost will be lower than the ones on the front wheels. Shop around. Drive line shops specialize in them but any good mechanic can do it.

Just replaced rear joint on my 1997 Chevy 1500 4x4 (5.7L). Went down the road and the caps on the joint that are tightened by the four bolts popped out. I did put in the clamp rings but they still popped...


There should be clips in the grooves on the caps that are held in by the drive shaft straps.All ujoint caps either have a clip in a groove or a snap ring clip on top that fits into a groove on the drive shaft yoke.These clips not only help keep the ujoint front spitting the caps out they also center the ujoint in the yoke on the rear axle.If you dont have a clip groove then you may have the wrong ujoint.Look closely at the old ujoint and you should see what I mean.Good Luck!

2003 dodge ram 2500 diesel. I have problem with the front axel u joint, it sound like it lose, and the shaft to the 4x4 sound like it lose too. do you think that i need to change the 4x4 oil or the shaft...


Hello Luis.... It sounds like the u joint itself is worn out and needs to be changed. Here is how to check it out:
Things You'll Need:
  • WHEEL BLOCKS
  • LEVEL GROUND
  • THERMAL TEMP GUN
  • GLOVES
  1. PARK VEHICLE ON LEVEL GROUND
  2. BLOCK WHEELS
  3. AFTER WHEELS ARE BLOCKED! (MAKE SURE WHEELS ARE BLOCKED SO VEHICLE WILL NOT ROLL) PLACE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL. "WITH ENGINE OFF!!!!!" NOW GET UNDER VEHICLE TO ACCESS DRIVELINE.
  4. NOW THE PRESSURE IS OFF U JOINT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS IN A NEUTRAL STATE!!! GRAB THE DRIVELINE AT THE FRONT AND REAR JOINT. SEE IF YOU CAN GET IT TO MOVE UP AND DOWN. IF IT HAS MOVEMENT IT IS BAD! IF NO MOVEMENT, MAKE SURE TO LOOK AT THE UJOINT IT'S SELF TO SEE IF IT SHOWS SIGNS OF DAMAGE.
    IF YOU STILL CAN NOT LOCATE IT? STEP FIVE IS THE FASTEST WAY TO MOST LIKELY FIND THE BAD UJOINT! BECAUSE IT IS NOT BROKE OR MOVING ALL OVER, DOES NOT MEAN IT IS NOT BAD! U JOINTS HAVE TO HAVE GREASE! WHEN THEY BECOME DRY AND STILL FEEL TIGHT! READ ON TO FIND OUT A PRETTY FAST WAY TO FIND IT!
  5. YOU ARE GOING TO REPEAT STEP ONE AND TWO AGAIN, BUT FIRST "WITH VEHICLE COLD", DRIVE A SHORT DISTANCE AT NORMAL SPEED. NO LESS THAN 5 BLOCKS AND NO MORE THAN A MILE. STOP VEHICLE AND REPEAT STEPS ONE AND TWO AT THIS TIME! ONE MORE STEP TO GO!!!
  6. AFTER BLOCKING WHEELS AND PLACING VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL, "WITH ENGINE OFF!!!", CLIMB UNDER VEHICLE ,TAKE A THERMAL TEMP GUN AND POINT IT AT THE UJOINT IT'S SELF. COMPARE THE FRONT UJOINT TO THE BACK UJOINT! THEY SHOULD BE REAL CLOSE TO THE SAME TEMP, IF ONE IS HIGHER IN TEMP BY MORE THAN 8 DEGREES, IT IS MOST LIKELY THE BAD ONE. HAVE IT REPLACED BY A QUALIFIED AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN.

Theres play in my front drive shaft. I dont know if its the u joint or the rear end going into the transfer case. what is the most in expensive way to fix problem. problem is when braking accasionally feel...


the cheapest way would be to remove the front driveshaft I guess... This will give you opportunity to inspect the Ujoints too!
If it is only a Ujoint... you can replace the Ujoint and shaft when you have the money to do so...

a rear u joint shouldnt cost more than about 30 bucks at any autoparts store...napa, canadian tire, pep boys whatever.

How to replace front u joints 2001 suburban?


if its 4wd drop front drive shaft remove the clips that hold the ujoints in place use a socket or a punch about the size of ujoint cap put in vise and knock out the old joint and replace with new one careful not to hurt needle bearings in the caps. if it is rear wheel drive and two piece driveshaft undo the the shaft at rearend and undo the center support bearing in the middle of the two shafts and pull out of vehicle replace ujoints same way as above. if it does not have the clips holding caps it plastic seal which needs to be heated up until the plastinc runs out of hole in flange

How do you change the front universal joints on a 2003 dodge ram 2500 4x4


The drive shaft will need to be removed. Remove ujoint cap clips from yolk and shaft. Should be four all together.tap out the u joints.
Remove cap from new ujoint. place into yoke from outside. Slip ujoint inside, attach to cap. press ujoint into housing. do the same with drive shaft side. Dont forget to put the new clips provided, on the shaft and yolk

u-joints are replaceable. Or, get a used driveshaft at car-part.com. page with asterisk is low price.

What is the flat rate time & materials to r&r front ujoint


you will need u-joints,frt hub seals,axle shaft dust seals and hub o-rings.most ford dealers charge 3 hrs for the hub service(seals) and 1.5 hrs to replace L+R u-joints.if they try to charge any more than 4.5 hrs go to different shop.if DIY there is a special seal driver needed to complete this repair.
