Re: 1999 Saturn sl Replacing Ignition
Disconnect the battery, of course. Turn the key to the ON or RUN position. There is a detent that you need to push to release the lock cylinder. There is a tool made for this. It's a thin flat metal blade. If your vehicle is equiped with anti-theft, you will need to reprogram it through your body control module, using a scan tool, before your car will start.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Mechanic (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

The Starter is located under the intake manifold on th back bottom side of the motor!
The only way to remove it is from under the car!
Remove the Neg Battery terminal from the battery before going under the car.
If I recall correctly, there are (2) 14 or 15mm bolts holding it to the engine block, one of them is a Blind bolt, as you will only be able to feel its location on the back side of the starter. (tip, when replacing the bolt behind the starter, either have a small magnet inside the socket to hold the bolt inside the socket while tring to locate the hole. You could also use a small piece of paper or plastic bag to wedge the bolt head to the socket so it doesn't fall out while tring to locate the hole!
You will also have a 13mm nut holding the Positive battery and Alt. cable to the starter and a 10mm nut holding the wire coming from the ignition switch.
Hope this helps!
Happy Saturn Motoring!
just beneath throttle body follow air intake remove air intake u will want to a small plastic soda bottle will work before doing this make sure there are sources of ignition some gas may leek out u will have to push in plastic retainer and pull fuel line closest to fire wall be sure to use eye protection place fuel line in bottle opening have some body turn the ignition on this will bleed any air out of the line if no gas pumps out check fuses and fuel pump relay
you can buy a new cylinder at most auto parts stores if you remove the plastic covers and you can turn the ignition enough to get it into the acc position there is a small release on the back side push it in and pull the cylinder out
when you turn key to acc pos that is telling the ignition to go into a accessory mode which runs the radio, wipers etc... but it doesnt allow the ignition circuit to run, and the key in most vehicles will not be able to come out, this is a security protection so that you do not leave accessories on that will drain the battery. The ignition key should only be able to be removed in the OFF position.
we learned how to remove that one from a video on www.saturnseries.net ....they have a DoItYourself guide...just click on 'interior' and scroll down the list of videos until you find it. a guy named richpin gives the instruction. i think he's on youtube too. im doing the same thing, but am stuck on trying to get the plastic trim off the edges of the ceiling so i can get the headliner out.
take off plastic surrounds on steering column.look for small hole on outer ignition barrel casing.use a 3mm bit of wire or allen key to depress button in this hole. with key in ignition turn to on position and gently pull out barrel
The plastic surround cosmetic piece which goes around the radio and climmate controls just snaps out to the rear with some gentle pulling. There will be then exposed two small bolts on either side of the radio. Unscrew them and the radio pulls out, the antenna wire and plug for the wiring harness will have to be disconnected. Note you will have to have an adapter for your panasonic to plug it into the GM wiring socket. If you stroll over to ebay motors you can find these adapters and find many replacements in case you break the cosmetic piece when you remove it.
