Hello,
Sounds to me like you need to replace the valve body on that transmission. Always get a new one when replacing this.

Check the cable under the gear lever. Look for broken pin or missing pin joining the lever to the cable

Gear shift stuck

Hi Ray, The advise above is good and should be checked out. If that does not solve the problem, before looking for a replacement transmission check and make sure the clutch is fully disengaging. If the clutch is mal adjusted that can also cause a problem with shifting gears. If the gears are stuck and wont shift at all the problem is most likely with the selector rods and/or forks. In that case you'll need major transmission work carried out. Regards John

My problem is that the manual transmission is stuck in 4th gear. I was backing up when I went to put it into 1st the shifter was stuck. The clutch works to disengage the gears but the shifter won't...

That cylinder is known as the clutch slave cylinder. It should push against the clutch fork every time the clutch pedal is depressed to allow gear changes. If it doesn't, suspect a faulty slave cylinder, or clutch master cylinder.

Transmission will shift properly and then it wont shift it stays on first i have disconnet and connect battery cables for it to shift

Sounds like you have a transmission problem.
The reason it's stuck in 1st or 2nd is the computer goes into "limp home mode" allowing you to get the vehicle to a service center to get it repaired.
By disconnecting the battery you reset the computer and your transmission works until it senses the problem again and goes into limp home mode again
Get your trans serviced

No passing gear

The cable is probably disconnected or broken. Look at the top of your engine, there should be 2 cables(look like bicycle cables) running to a big flapper looking thing. They are very likely shrouded with plastic cover. One of them goes to your gas pedal, the other to the transmission. This is a problem that you will want to get fixed soon, the transmission in your car has a bad habit of messing up if the passing gear cable is out of adjustment, you should have a qualified trans. shop do it for you. If there is only one cable, then you have a faulty connection for the electric-shift. Check all connections. If you can't fix it, bring it to a shop. It will cost a lot more if you don't.

Check the trans gear oil!!!
Also the cables from the shifter to the trans actuate levers on the trans that sometimes stick. Check the levers.

Had transmission apart to fix hole. now gear shift is stiff ??? could it be in transmission or is shift cable seized?

This can be diagnosed by removing cables at the trans and verifying cables and shifter, then the movement of the actual shifter housing on the trans. Shift cables are a fairly common item

If one cable is broke it won't shift right noy need to repalce the cable and cable housing then adjust the cable so it shifts. With the cabe broke it is trying to shift into 2 gears at the same time.
