The car quites due to the electrical power not fuel. It's as if the electrical power was totally disconnected from the car and reconnected. the radio even drops to an AM station as if you disconnected the battery.

This issue is due to lose of electrical power not fuel to the engine. It is as if you completely disconnected the power from the car as you are driving down the road and than reconnected. The car will restart every time. the radio even goes to an AM station just like you had disconnected the battery.

Car shutting off

Hi,
whilst i am not familiar with the actual car i would say...
if it cuts out immediately then its electrical...check coil, ignition amplifier etc.
If the car cuts slowly by losing power, spluttering etc it will be fuel related....fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter.
Does the car restart immediately or do you have to leave it for a while?
what happens just prior to the vehicle shutting down?

Why do my 93 grand Marquis lose power and cut off when I put the car in drive

Do this service.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Well,I hope it's not a rod bearing, but that comes to mind. It MIGHT be a bad u-joint on the driveshaft or a busted transmission or motor mount. don-ohio (:^)

My 1996 mercury grand marquis starts and runs good, good power, has 200,000 miles on it. When I fill it up and drive it, it dies and starts right back up. I think it is the fuel pump. I have not checked...

You might have a bad gas cap. I would also change the fuel filter, I did a fuel filter on the same type of vehicle and the gas coming out of it looked like black ink, it was so dirty.

My cigarette lighter 1996 mercury grand marquis

Your thought that the end of something fell into the lighter fried something is likely true. I can't imagine that the wire could be fried and the fuse is still good. check to see if the fuse you checked was the right one. If it was and it is good, a wire on the back of the receptacle may have come lose. The end that fell into the receptacle, did it get hot or damaged? That could be a clue as to if the receptacle was shorted when the end fell into it or if not, then look for a lose connection.

95 Grand Marquis loses power between 45mph - 60mph

Mine was doing the same thing. I took it to one place and they charged me $107.00 for a fuel injection cleaning. That didn't do a thing. I then took it to a backyard mechanic and it turned out to be a bad spark plug. It has been running great ever since. Good luck.
