My 390 seems to run ok, the milage is guessed at about 11 mpg.   It should be about 15 from what I understand The idle is too fast even when warmed up.  As long as I drive 55, the truck humms down the road.  How can I adjust the idle down, or is it advisable?  It backfires when very cold until warmed up.  Was told  by previous owner that the carburator was warped, but I dont think she knew what she was talking about.  Was also told by someone else that the engine was prone to valve problems and to sell it  before they become a problem.  Would like to keep the truck (it was a gift) and dont know what to do.  Anyone know?

I presume you have a carburetor, if so it is time to replace it. There used to be kits to rebuild them, but the kits available today just don't get the job done. Sounds like you have a dirty carb, and of course this is somewhat complicated to remove and take apart and clean. There may even be a rebuilt available for it.

You may have a serious vacuum leak or any of several sensors might have failed. Get the OBD codes from the car's computer.

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.

You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

Hi guys...my yaris is running rich, has poor gas mileage (360km on a full tank). and very slow and choppy idle (idles like a really old car) these are the things i have done so far : change air and fu

Do the following:
1. Clean the throttle body from inside.
2. Adjust the spark plugs gap to 1.00 mm.
3. Check fuel pump pressure. (44 Psi - 49 psi)
4. Remove the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes.
5. Connect the battery terminal.
6. Check the engine oil level and coolant level.
NOTE: Before starting the engine shut off all lights and loads for example room light, blower, radio, parking light etc.
7. Start the engine and hold the throttle at 3000 rpm till radiator fan comes on.
8. After the fan comes on release the throttle pedal and let it idle for 10 minutes.

ive had a problem like this before it turned out being a shim under the camshaft worn and when idle it wasn't pushing the valve down properly.all it took was shimming it out.might want to check that out pending your mileage.
