Question about 1993 Isuzu Trooper

2 Answers

I have a 3.1 auto bighorn and the auto transmission from time to time plays up by jumping and seems to slip. Also the speedometer reading drops to zero and no mileage is recorded. I don't think its a mechanical problem and it appears to me anyway if some kind of transmission power management (electrical) is playing about. This is an intermittent fault and sometimes everything runs normal. Any ideas what to do. Would it be some kind of sensor playing about? If so where would it be located? Thank you Regards Mike

I have the same problem and in my case, the ATOIL/Temp warning in the dashboard appears every now then. The engine loses power and transmission seems to slip. I have already changed ATF but after a day, the ATOIL warning lights again. Please help. thanks.

The speedo sensor is at the back of the transmission and it controls the overdrive or last two gears.this is an electrical switch and needs to be replaced.

I am no Honda expert, but a similar problem happened to my ex sister in-laws Ford Taurus. The speed odometer would jump around and it had trouble shifting (automatic transmission). After driving it I changed out the speed odometer sensor on the transmission and it's been fine ever since. I changed out the sensor because if the cars computer cannot tell how fast the car is traveling then fail safes in place go into effect and the computer will do it's best to keep the cars rpm's down based on the speed indicator and not let it shift or shift properly either. If it's getting false speeds then it will shut down the motor when the speed gets to high and allow it to run as the speeds fall (jumping speed odometer needle). It effects the transmission shift points also. It will either shift erratically or not shift out of say 2nd gear, so that the cars engine can't get damaged based on what signal the speed sensor is sending the computer.

Sorry you will have to consult the dealer for the services of the nerdy looking one with the laptop under his arm on this ,suspect a fault with electricals if this is a auto version ,well its a american so it must be a auto as they dont have proper instructors who can teach students how to drive a manual vehicle .Do love winding up my american cousins over this but the fact is its a 2009 model with more electronics than the apollo moon mission in 69

Hello: This is a common problem. The cluster is faulty. Check battery cables for clean and tight. Check all grounds. I don't think it could have anything to do with pulling away from a stop. Is the transmission slipping?

1997 Toyota Camry, the transmission is not shifting right. It jumps up and down in drive and the speedometer sporadic

it is not the gauge cluster or the speed sensor. I have the same problem on the same car and it is getting much worse sense letting others drive it" for a short time. when the transmission slips I put the petal to the floor a few times and it will fall into passing gear, and I am good till I stop racing and try to contiue a set speed. at the time it slips the speedometer goes to zero and then jumps as it tries to get a gear. I have gone through all the wiring and it seems to be ok for what it is " **** but working". I took the computer apart and inspected for any visible evidence of a problem and found none. but I do suspect it to be the problem. I am going to ohm test all external solenoids tomorror morning before buying computer. please let me know what fixed you car if you become aware of my repost to your very old add. or if you have put the car aside for awhile and are ready to fix it once I find the problem with this one this week e-mail me at donaldwilhite@ymail.com.

Rpm goes up and the speedometer doesnt move and it putts down the street till it catches..doesnt do it all the time...a auto guy told me it was the ignition module and the ignition coil, and he said it...

Unless you are getting a false rpm reading, then your transmission is indeed slipping. Does the engine speed up in conjunction with the tachometer? If the answer is yes, you do have a slipping tranny. Good Luck, I hope this helps.

Change your gearbox oil, and clean out the oil strainer.
Should help.

( On some models, you have to remove the gearbox oil pan to clean the strainer )

Problem is the detent springs for 4/5 gear have gone weak .
If you are handy its take the top off the gearbox from inside the car and you will see the plug then the springs and balls .
If not its a transmission shop job.

if it is jumping gears, the gear box will not do that, it is more than likely your sedondary inside the transmission.
