2002 PT Cruiser Shifter Wont Go Into Reverse - Manual 5 speed

The clutch seems fine, break fluid is ok (someone told me to check it that it affects the clutch), no slipping or grinding ever. I just went to go to work, started the car and went to move the shifter into Reverse and it wouldn't go. I wiggled, pushed, and shoved and finaly if I did it just right I could force it into place and backed up just fine. No problem getting the actual shifter to move to the 1,2,3,4,or 5 gear but when I go as I have for the last 4 year to slide the shifter to the right then back it just feels like it encounters something before it gets to the Reverse spot???? I took it to a local garage this morning and was told I need a new clutch...My bull sh....t alarm went off and it's sitting in the drive.
Any ideas?
Kindest regard
Mel

Same problem. 2003 model. 50k miles. Dealer won't say anything on the phone about what it could be. Works well in other gears. tried releasing clutch partly as suggested for other cars, but does not work. I am wondering whether this is a issue when these cars get older.

I had the EXACT same problem on my 01 PT. Very easy and inexpensive fix. There is a bushing that is located under the air box under the hood. It is in the shifter linkage. It falls apart from the heat of the engine and age. Mine was completely gone! The dealership didn't sell the bushing itself, they wanted to sell the whole arm for $$! I found this place that sells polyurethane bushing that work great. They sell you two, one for under the hood and one under the console. I just replaced the one under the hood.
All you have to take off is the air box, press the bushing into the sleeve then press it onto the pin and you are done. This place sells them as race parts that gives you a tighter shift.

After reading opelenvy's solution I fashioned two bushings to solve this problem. There were two sleeves under the airbox, one for the shifter and one for the transmission. Both of mine were gone and I needed to back up today, so i slid a 5/8" rubber hose cut to 1/2" into the smaller sleeve and slipped it over the pin. I added a washer and cotter pin to complete that one. The larger sleeve required me to slip the same hose inside of a 3/4
" pvc pipe, cut the combo to 1/2" and install the same way I did the first one. It works perfectly.

Thanks Gammaman, this worked for me too. I did order the bushing kit from ****** Racing (the link above, in openlenvy's post) and will replace all four bushings when those come in.

Without this forum I don't know how much money I would have had to spend in a shop somewhere! And to top it off the guy in the neighborhood parts store gave me the rubber hose for nothing.

Hi let me start by clarify that the brake fluid they are talking about goes in to the clutch slave reservoir in cars equiped with hidraulic sistem and is not the one for your brakes ,is another small reservoir close to the other one , when you add fluid to the slave ,if your car have this sistem it must be bleed at the slave to let the air out ,also check the transmision oil level and check for cluth ajustment if aplicable,if none of this works you may have to replace cluth assembly. good luck...

on pt cruiser's there is no bleeder screw in the hydraulic clutch systom , i've owned 5 pt's and i just bought a 02 that shifts fine when cold bot when it warms up it is hard going into 1st gear and grinds in 3rd, i just had a new modual clutch kit put in and it still dose the same thing. but now i have to put the pedle all the way to the floor and it grabs about a 1/4 inch off the floor. ive been told there is an ajustment right on the pedel but i can't see it ?

I had this exact same problem with my 01. Very simple fix. there is a rubber bushing on the shifter linkage that is located under the airbox under the hood. The rubber falls apart over time. Mine was completely gone. The dealership wanted to sell you the whole linkage.
This company makes these out of polyurethane. They sell you two of them, one for under the hood and one in located under the console. The one in the console is fine, it' the one under the hood exposed to the heat that falls apart. http://www.howellautomotive.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=802
I guarantee this fixes your problem.

It sounds like the reverse synchronizer is bad.You should take it to a reputable transmission shop.

My 2004 chysler pt crusier wont backup it make a noise going forward

I'm not sure if you have a manual or automatic transmission. Sometimes the manual transmissions have trouble going into reverse and you need to hold it in while letting out the clutch for it to engage positively. If you have an automatic transmission, check the transmission fluid level and see if it smells burnt or abnormal.

Post a comment with a few more details and we will get back to you.

Thanks,

Tim

2004 Saturn Vue shifting problem

You should probably check the shifter cable. I had the same thing happen and then I couldn't shift into 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears. Then the cable snapped and I had to replace it. Be careful "man-handling" the shifter. If you break the shift linkage at the base of the shifter it's about $45 from the dealership. It's cheap plastic and doesn't take much to break. If you really want to know if it's the shift cable and not the gearbox crank the engine, have someone hold the clutch, disconnect the shift cables from the box, and manually shift the gears. If they move smooth, it's probably your cable which would mean there's a kink in it somewhere. You can't fix that. Depending on the VIN you're looking at anywhere from $189 (what mine cost with tax) to a little over $200 (from the dealership brand new). Talk to the parts desk at a Saturn dealership and they can tell you which one you need. Hope this helps
