You have a ignition switch problem. when you start the car,and release the key in the "start" position, the switch does not kick back, as it should. you have an ignition switch going bad. nothing to play with,as it may cause fire in the steering column. suggest you call the dealer as this may be a recall, and you did not receive the recall notice due to recent move,or mail issues.my neice has one too,her husband works for local law enforcement.please,if you find any default or recall, post it to fixya.com but i personally have NOT heard of any such recalls. thank you for choosing fixya.com

I have a 2002 and a 2003 Rendezvous and, on occassion, they both continue to start after the key switch kicks back . . . . . . . is this a problem? I have owned these vehicles for at least 7 years and they have always done that on occassion.

Starter solenoid kicks back before engine starts

it may push the gear out just fine, but lack power to keep it pressed forward .Sounds like a solinoid problem. It is turning off before releasing the key. Check the solinoid! God-Bless!

Starter ddisengages

Sounds like the bendix drive or solenoid on the starter is failing. The solenoid energizes the starter coil and also extends the drive into the flywheel.

Sounds to me like your starter did not disengage and was running the whole time when vehicle running. From your key to the starter is a "trigger wire" which activates the starter when you turn the key. If that wire end touches other wires on the starter then the solenoid will stay on keeping the starter running which will then over heat and burn out the starter. If vehicle was running fine before the starter replacement there is really nothing else it could be.

Turn key motor start but starter eeps turning over stops when put in gear

Sounds like the Pinon(gear) in the starter is getting stuck and not disengaging when you release the key. It may need to be lubed up or replaced.

Starter engages but wont disengage when started

You'll need to figure out if it is an electrical problem or something hanging up in the bell housing.
You can leave off the wire from the key and try it to see if something is powering the solenoid after you release the key switch. If your model has the solenoid on the fender it could be sticking.

You will need to replace the starter and or solenoid as the starter drive is not disengaging the starter gear and power is constantly being fed to the solenoid. Don't drive the vehicle this way as the starter drive will burn up and possibly strip the starter gear which is a much more major problem to fix.
