Question about Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

2008 toyota rav4 limited with no heat on the drivers side only. I found the air mix servo motor for that side and it does turn when changing required cabin temperature but it seems to me to be turning the wrong way. I removed the motor and turned the door assy by hand to the hot position, the motor would have turned it the opposite way. Can you verify which way the motor should turn as viewed in the installed location? Diagram of the actual movement and the design of the door as it is impossible to see in the unit?

    Hello,

Yes, please send the diagram to dg1812red@gmail.com. If I understand correctly, when I view the motor assy from the gear side looking down at the face of the gear itself the gear should turn counter clockwise for more heat which is what it does. I then turn it around and install it so it now turns clockwise as viewed from the shaft end of the gear and this turns the mix door gear counterclockwise. When I turn the mix door gear by hand I have to turn it clockwise to get more heat.

Any diagrams of the internal workings of the big white plastic assy with the evaparator and heat exchanger?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Got the diagram, thanks. The servo motor is responding correctly so do you have any info on what might be wrong in the air mix door assy that would cause it to be backwards?

  • dg1812red Apr 15, 2011

Sorry it took me a while to respond. The drivers side air mix servo motor is one of two used in the dual zone climate system on the RAV4 Limited. I checked a 2008 RAV4 at a local dealer and the motor turns the opposite way mine does which is also opposite of the drawing you forwarded to me. Possibly the drawing is for the single zone system? Anyway, I still have to determine if it's the servo or the Ac amplifier control?

dave: i am not sure just what you have going on but the door can not flip in the box we do see them brake the piviot shaft from time to time but when this happens the door just will not move any more, if when you move the door to the cold posetion you seam to get more heat it might be because you are turning off the outside air mix and aer just recurculation the air inside the cabin of the car, i have a diagram of the heater/a/c unit that gives you an idea of how the air flowes i will send it to your e-mail. but alwise rember not to over think this thing when you find it it will seem very simple and you will wonder why it took you so long to get it.

DTC B1340 Air Mix Door #1 Movement Problem !
The heater and A/C programmer supplies voltage to an internal motor that drives the air mix door. The heater and A/C programmer monitors the air mix door position feedback from a sensor on the motor. If the air mix door is requested to move but the feedback voltage does not change, the heater and A/C programmer will store DTC B1340. If the air mix door feedback indicates that the feedback is near the hot or the cold extreme, the DTC will not set. Evaluate the operation of the air mix door through self diagnostics as described in the test description.
Test Description
Perform the Diagnostic System Check before continuing with the diagnosis of this DTC.
A Scan Tool allows for the direct control of the air mix door by observing the following conditions:
• The air mix door position feedback value
• The value`s difference from the air mix door commanded position value
These readings indicate a fault internal to the heater and A/C programmer in the air mix door sensor feedback.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check?
--
Go to Step 2
Go to Diagnostic System Check
2
With the engine running, connect a Scan Tool .
Turn the dual zone to OFF (passenger temperature offset at 0 or OFF).
Exercise the suspect actuator using the temperature control on the control assembly.
Is the door being commanded (COM) to the proper high and low values?
COM High 100 %
COM Low 0 %
Go to Step 3
Go to Step 4

If you are unfamilier with this , i suggest you take it to a ASE certified repair shop or the dealer .

2002 Toyota Rav4....check engine light""is

Here are two of the most common causes of the check engine light.

Most common, MAF ( mass air flow ), sensor. A faulty MAF prevents the computer from determining the correct fuel/air mix ratio.

Oxygen sensor. ( front and rear, front meaning before the catalytic converter, rear meaning after the catalitic converter. The front measures the fuel/air mix being sent through the catalitic converter, the back measures the emmisions and lets the computer know if any fuel/air mix ratios need to be adjusted. Both of these can trigger the check engine light.

I hope this helps you.

I have two noise-related problems with my '99 Lexus rx300.

I had a similar annoying noise with the root cause being found in the air-mix servo. This servo motor box is one of three I believe and is located on the passenger side of the climate control system and accessed by removing the glove compartment (4 screws) and the panel down just above the floor. The servo in question is located behind a couple of heater tubes and you need a stubby phillips screwdriver to remove it. Disconnect the wiring plug. The servo has a damper actuator on one side. Hold with the actuator down and pry open the case. Don't fret if the snaps break because the unit is held together with screws anyway. Clean the contacts inside the box and re-lube the gears and contact plate with silicone grease. Reassemble and reinstall (kind of a pain). Works fine now in my auto (all is quiet again!) and saves hundreds of bucks vs. a visit to Lexus service. Shield the servo from heater tube heat with some aluminum reflective duct sealing tape. I think the heat breaks the lube down and caused the servo voltage to become errant, causing the servo to "hunt" and generate annoying noise. Good Luck.

2003 Toyota Echo heat not working. Fan, but no heat.

There is a valve on one of the heater hoses that allows heated water to flow through the heater core when you select heat. With heat selected and car warmed up check to see if both of the hoses feel warm. If not then water is not flowing through heater core and valve may need replaced or heater core is stopped up.

95 toyota camry coolant problem

adam, if you want your fans to turn on, add a switch in your dash panel. there is a firewall break behind the driver side front wheel, so all wiring can be run through there. to solve the over heating, check fluid levels, replace the water pump, and just for kicks, replace the fluid and hoses. make sure there is 50/50 mixture in the coolant system that really does make a diffrence. good luck!

AC temperature

Servo motor? I disagree. Actually, there are 3 servo motors in the vehicle; an air inlet servo, an air mix servo, and an air outlet servo. None of which control the temperature.
The AC temp is controlled by a thermister in the cooler box/eveporator unit under the dash.
