    Yes I just got the same code on my bmw 323is code p1423 that just popped up. Can somebody please email me at and tell me how it needs to get fixed, so I will know before I take it to get it fixed so they won't be trying to hastle me when I take it to the shop.

    when you have problems with secondary air pump.check air pump hoses and vacuum any hoses that are damaged.replace missing hoses.make sure vacuum source is getting to vacuum valve.the intake manifold vacuum should be present with the engine running.intake manifold vacuum feed vacuum to vacuum valve. check fuses wiring going to secondary pump.if fuse good power going to air pump. the dealership has to use a scan tool to check to see if ecm energize the vacuum solenoid by completing the circuit to ground.the valve opens vacuum is applied to the check valve, the check valve opens and air flows through the tube into the exhaust pipe.if you have problems with the secondary air pump.most time pump not getting power at the vacuum valve solenoid.or vacuum valve not getting vacuum, or the check valve not opening up.or the secondary air pump has failed or ecm has failed, not commanding the vacuum valve solenoid to open up.hope this information gives you a scope on how system your mechanic cant confuse you make you spend too much money.

I got codes p0455,p1421,p1423,p0141

code P0455......... Evaporative emission system leak detected ( large leak ) check gas cap

code 1451...........secondary air system leak ( bank 2 ) check for vacuum leak

code 1423...........secondary air system leak ( bank 1 ) check for vacuum leak

code 0141...........02 sensor heater circuit ( bank 1, sensor 2 ) replace 02 sensor

I went to the emission test and I have a vw 2000 and I didnt pass couse My car has three problems and they gaved me three different codes and I dont know what they mean p1423,p0431,p1411

p1423 Secondary Air Injection Bank 1 flow too low

P0431 Warm Up Catalyst, Bank 2 Efficiency Below Threshold/Limit

P1411 Secondary air injection fault, this is related to the P1423.

1998 328i.. Got a 1421 and 1423 code...not sure where to start...

1997 BMW 328I 2.8L Customer Concern: MIL is on with trouble codes P1421 and P1423, for incorrect secondary airflow on both cylinder banks. Tests/Procedures: 1. Perform a functional test of the Air Injection Reaction (AIR) system. Tee a vacuum gauge into the vacuum hose attached to the diverter valve, located on the cylinder head towards the front of the engine.

2. Allow the vehicle to sit over night. Start the engine (cold) while monitoring the amount of vacuum on the gauge at startup. At temperatures from -10 to 40 degrees Celsius, there should be at least 17 inches of vacuum. At the same time, the AIR pump should run and pump a large volume of air into the exhaust. Potential Causes: A.I.R. Pump
Air Pump Relay
Restricted Cylinder Head
Diverter Valve
Tech Tips: These codes are related to a problem detected in the Secondary Air Injection system. Scan tools with BMW software include a feature to command the AIR pump on and off. The pattern failures for these codes are the AIR pumps due to leaks in the diverter valve and moisture or condensation in the AIR pump.

Possible fix but not all items. Just areas to look at:

Check Engine Light on - codes P1423 P1421

I'm not sure where you got the codes... I have a Peake R5/FCX-3 - nice for diagnostics.

You should look at the various BMW forums out there - bimmerforums is a good one.

From a simple google search - Google is your friend...

I reset the CEL and it returned with just the P1421 and P1423 code. I researched the web and found that on the BMW, this is the secondary air pump for cylinders 1-3 that provides air to the exhaust during warm up. According to others, this may be due to a check valve stuck open or closed. Or, it could also be a leak in the output hose or a vacuum hose to the valves. The vacuum line runs close to the engine causing it to get brittle and crack. This 30 cents hose can cause the valve to stay closed, keeping water in the pump and eventually, corrosion to occur. I'll work on it over the weekend and post my results.


Low vacuum to the check valve. Found the Electric Valve Switch leaking vacuum. PN 11-74-7-537-612 $43.55.
