Sounds like the starter is staying on after the car is started, possibly a starter solenoid,is what is needed, i am not sure.

I just posted a question about my 2001 Chevy Cavalier not starting .the engine doesn't even crank over so I don't know what else it could be because the battery is brand new

how about a bad starter?

If there is no cranking noise when you turn the key to the start position than check the following.

1. Make sure there is power at the large terminal/wire at the starter all the time.

2. Check that there is power on the small wire/terminal at the starter with the key in the crank position.

If both of those check out than replace the starter.

What would cause a 2001 chevy cavalier has to be started touching wires on the starter?

There are 2 wires to thr Starter. A thick cable which comes directly from the attery and a thin cable which comes from the ignition switch. it would appear from your description that one of these is either loose, dirty or has a bad solder joint. Establish which wire you are touching that makes it work, then you might have to replace the terminal on the end.

Chevy cavalier wont stop cranking

You need to make sure the solenoid wire isn't making contact with the starter wire. Be sure you don't have the purple wire making contact with the red wire.

Car wont start

A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter from the key, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch. You may have connected the small wire from the key to the wrong post on the solenoid.

1994 cavalier major problem

Two possibles, you may have a short in the wire that acctuates the starter or your ignition switch is bad.If you want the procedure for checking these comment back and I'll respond this afternoon. As far as the stalling problem,I'm not sure, does it only do stall in a turn or stop? It's possible the baffle in the fuel tank has broke free.
