If you have power steering then you have power assist as i don`t think gm came out with electric assist until a few years later.look under the hood for a power steering pump this is usually located at the rear upper passenger side of the motor.

Power steering

You may have to be under the car to trace the line. It will run from the PS pump down behind the engine to where it connects to the rack and pinion steering gear. The rack and pinion is on a subframe piece below and behind the engine. The 2 PS lines connect on the driver's side of the rack and pinion, if like nearly all GM cars.

The pressure line can be disconnected from the pump (suction out the fluid first or it will leak all over), up at top, and then disconnect it at the rack and pinion. If this fitting on the rack is hard to reach, you may need a crows foot wrench to loosen it and remove-I'm not sure about aleros. After disconnecting it top and bottom, check for any brackets that hold the two lines together, and for a bracket that may hold the lines secure on the backside of the engine.

2000 oldsmobile alero slid into a ditch and now has no power steering what so ever checked power steering pump and it is working

Its possible something broke inside the rack and pinion, but in most cases the fluid leaks out. Its possible something in the steering linkage is binding up and making it tough to turn with or without power assist.

Loosing power steering fluid from under steering colomn. What type and size of wrench do I need to tighten?

Could be one of the hoses going to the power rack and pinion or one of the seals in the rack and pinion that are bad.

99 Olds alero will only turn to the right. On quick inspection found that the rack and pinion moves with turning the wheels. Is it supposed to?

The whole rack & pinion does NOT move! Only the rod out of either end of it. If the main body, where the hoses connect, is moving the mounting bolts are missing, or broken.

Normally any vehicle with rack & pinion steering, that will not turn left equals a bad rack & pinion.
The "wont turn left" is the classic industry wide indicator that the rack & pinion is worn out.

Leakage in racket pin

If your rack and pinion steering unit is leaking power steering fluid, you most likely have blown a seal in the unit. These are gennerally non-repaiable. Replace the rack and pinion unit. Not an easy job, but an intermediate knowledge home mechanic can do it.

Is there a drain plug for the rack and pinion?

YOU HAVE TO DRAIN POWER STEERING PUMP FIRST THEN YOU HAVE TO REMOVE ONE OF THE RACK AND PINION LOWER LINES TO DRAIN OUT FLUID.

Power streering went and fluid is pouring out the bottom? I need to know if this is a rack and pinion system.

Possibly, but more likely a break in the high pressure hose that runs from the power steering pump to the rack and pinion assembly.
