Question about 2004 Saturn VUE

2 Answers

I have a 2004 Saturn VUE FWD Manual. I was hearing a roaring sound while driving at highway speeds. Now I hear a grinding type sound similar to worn brakes but I replaced the brakes myself just 6 months ago. The grinding sound is very noticable at slow speeds. I can also hear like a ticking sound at all speeds. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the reply helpmech. I will recheck the brakes. One detail I left out was when I turn right the grinding sound gets worst. But when I turn left, the grinding sound is not as noticeable.

Thanks for the reply supertech-11. I have been seaching online for replacement front wheel bearing hubs. I am been reviewing my repair manual and it looks like a job I can take care of myself. Do you know if I need any type of special tool to replace the wheel bearing hubs? Or would I just be better off taking it to a good repair shop?

    Thanks for your time.

This sounds like a very familiar problem. My fiancee's Saturn had almost the exact issue some months ago.
It sounds like a worn wheel bearing (which incidentally may have caused the brake pads to wear prematurely, so re check the brakes)
When replacing the bearing, get one with a lifetime guarantee, because if the loose bearing has shifted anything out of true, it can cause the bearing to go again, and you don't want to buy a bearing 3 or 4 times.
A wheel bearing would explain pretty much all the noises you have described.
Hopefully, it's just the bearing and replacing it fixes all your woes.

The bearing supports the "turn one way and it's worse" scenario.
For warranty purposes, I would have a shop do it.
We went through a number of bearings before they finally fixed the issue that was causing the bearings to go in the first place, so the lifetime warranty really saved our butts back then!

As you mentioned grinding type noise, ticking sound etc etc. This types of noise is heard, if there is a problem with any of the wheel bearings. If the wheel bearings gets rusted or loose, they make such noise. --------- But if the noise is not from any of the wheel bearing, then its due to mis-alignment in brake system. It has to be re-checked.As you mentioned, you replaced the brake few months back.Quite possible, that any of the internal parts is got loose or out of alignment. The pads have a metal tab built in them and when they get low enough that tab hits the rotor and makes a grinding noise.--------- To get more details.Click this link below:---

Getting it done at a repair shop is advisable. You require a tool to press the bearings and hubs.
front bearing torque 151 ft lb rear bearing torque 63 ft lb plus 36 degrees.

This are done with a press. You have have to remove the wheel hub and take it to a machine shop to have the old one pressed out and the new one pressed in.Instead of this you can get the complete procedure done at repair shop. and also get the wheel pressure checked.the wheel alignment checked.this will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Roaring sound coming from rear. when driving down the the highway the noise gets a little louder. i can hear it really well when i am on my way to work in the morning.

Roaring sounds that get louder with speed is usually the bearings. A mechanic can check this on a lift. Some vehicles need them to be pressed in, others come as one unit with the hub assembly. Good luck!

My 2004 Vue makes a very consistent winding type sound while driving. It starts out low and increases to a point and never veries until I slow down. What could that be? No front end deviation, no...

Try swerving back and forth when you hear this. If the pitch changes while swerving one way or the other, it is probably the wheel bearing and it needs a new hub. Not too hard to change.

When we are driving out 2004 dodge Stratus everything sounds good until we turn. When we turn we hear a grinding noise coming from the front of the car. What could be causing this?

More then likely its a CV joint, but most of the time it would be a clicking you'd hear. Do you hear a roaring sound when driving in a straight line? Its possible then it could be a wheel bearing and when turning the sound is more pronounced.
