Question about 2001 Saturn SL

2 Answers

My heater would only work on hi and even then the heat was not as warm as it should be. Then today on the way home I noticed a small amount smoke coming from the switch area where you turn it on and adjust the fan level but it did not stop the air from blowing. I am assuming there is a short of some sort. What kind of repair and possible cost am I looking at? Thanks

Hi, often the switch goes bad and then causes the resistor to fail as well. Clearly your switch is bad, but I think your resistor may be bad as well. Remove both and check for heat damage.

The operating only on HIGH is most likely a problem with the Blower Motor Resistor - this part costs about $30 The problem with the smoke is most likely the Blower Control Switch - Saturn has had problems with both of these. Most aftermarket parts houses have replacement switches for around $60. You have to remove and disassemble the A/C - Heater control head to install the new switch. (About 1 hour of labor if you have it done professionally - about 1.5 to 1.9 hours for both the switch and the resistor)

If you are having smoke coming from the switch area on the dash then you will need a new switch and probably a new plug connector for the switch.the cost is dependent on the shop that gets the switch and replaces it,as every shop has different pricing .the heat out the air ducts is a separate problem.check the coolant level in the radiator and overflow bottle to make sure it is full,if it is then you may just need a new thermostat, the other thing it could be for poor heat is the heater core may be plugged.

My 2002 pt cruiser only smokes when I sart it, and then it dissipates. can you tell me what is causing this?

Smoking at startup can be one of two things....water or oil.
Moisture buildup in the muffler will show up as white smoke on startup, usually more noticeable on cooler mornings than on warm days. Blue smoke on startup is usually caused by small amounts of oil that leak past the valve seals as they get older, worn, and dry out. This is not usually a major issue unless and until it gets to the point of causing oil-fouling of the spark plug(s). Then you must either repair the problem or be prepared to clean your spark plug(s) periodically if the engine starts to display a noticeable misfiring.

First you need to purge the trapped air out of the system. Go to a shop that has evac/fill equipment and tehy can do it for about $75. It is ahrd to get air out. park uphill and rasie front of truck as high as possible, and keep cap loose during warm up. It will burp air. Then tighrten cap & let it cool while keeping the reservoir full during cool down. Repeat at least once. Make sure hose from rad to reservoir is tight at both ends to avoid sucking air in.

report results.

please rate if helpful

No heat is a sign of trapped air.

Trust what the AA says ..

It does sound like you have an airlock .. and the airlock is likely to be in the heater matrix, as opposed to the radiator.

Bleed the heating system: Set your heater controls to hot and fully open. Let the engine work until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check your coolant level to see if it has dropped.

You can always bleed the coolant system by leaving the coolant bottle cap off for 10 minutes whilst the engine ticks over.

It isn't your water pump.

I have a 1995 dodge caravan and im trying to locate the air valve that contols the amount of heat for the heater?i have hot water going in and out of the heater core but my heat on the inside is luke warm...

240cpa is right.dodge caravan does not have a heater control
valve and coolant constantly crculate in heater core . use the temperature contorol on instrument panel if you notice no change in heat your blend door in heater box is not moving . and as 240cpa mentioned make sure the t stat is not stuck open.

Lots of smoke is coming out of the pre heater pipe on the side the car ...what is the solution to problem and can it be done at home or to i have to take it to a garage ...any details on this is wellcome...

Hi Emma
all normal, the voyager is fitted with an auxilary heating system, which is supposed to help warm the occupants of the car before the diesel engine actually warms up to take over, even after stopping and turning the engine off, the smoke coming from under the passenger side is the car burning off fuel from the auxilary heater (smells like kerosene) i found this to be unpleasant, especially when i open the doors to get the kids out, everyone is smoked, so i turn the heater off as i approach home, whereby any unspent fuel is burned off before you stop. so there is no need to go to a garage.
hope this has reassured you.

White smoke

The smoke must come from a coolant leak close to the radiator, or a fin crack in the radiator itself. Check all hoses and clamps, idle hot and look for smoke. You may have a heater core corrosion issue, watch close for coolant leaks on the floor mats inside, all of this may be connected and look for leaks where you park. Just a small amount can produce smoke, open the hood when it smokes and look.
