You have a problem with the anti-theft system and it doesn`t recognize the key being used.you will have to have the key programed into the computer if it has a chip in the key.if it is a key normally used then the wires for the anti-theft system in the ignition switch have possibly broken.they are two small white wires and is a common problem as they move around in the area and there is not much play in them.

GM uses a Passlock system, it reads the resistance of the chip in the key. If you had a key made from anywhere but the dealer, you need to get a new one made. They put your key in a test box and then they know what blank to use. It is also a known issue that the contacts in the ingition switch that reads that chip can go bad.

If all else fails, and this depends on the year, there is a relay in the drivers side kick pad that closes when the Passkey system is satisfied. In the past I was able to sucessfully jump out the relay to get the car to start. The downside is the security light stays ON.

Another possible solution, guys who install remote starters know how to cut in and install a resistor on top of the steering column to eliminate this. It is sometimes needed to allow the remote starter to work since there is no key in the ignition at the time. I suggest looking up a site called www.the12volt.com. There are many install experts that post on that site and there is a wiring diagram database that may do you some good.

THERE IS A CHIP IN THE KEY I BELIEVE. THERE IS A RELEARN PROCEDURE YOU CAN TRY IF WHEN YOU TRY AND START IT THE SECURITY LIGHT FLASHES. HOOK UP A BATTERY CHARGER. TURN THE KEY ON AND TRY AND START THE CAR AND RELEASE . DO NOT TURN KEY OFF LEAVE IT IN THE RUN POSITION. AFTER 10 MINS THE LIGHT WILL STOP FLASHING. TURN KEY OFF. TRY AND RESTART CAR AND AGAIN DO NOT TURN KEY OFF LEAVE IN THE RUN POSITION. LET SET 10 MINS AGAIN. LIGHT WILL STOP FLASHING AFTER THAT 10 MINS. DO IT AGAIN FOR THE 3RD TIME. SHUT KEY OFF LET SET 5 SECONDS AND START THE VEHICLE. HOPE THIS HELPS

My 97 buick lesabre will not engage the starter when I turn ignition to the start position. The starter only has the positive cable and a purple wire going to it. I can manually apply the 12 volts to...

If the anti theft light is on,turn the key to on and wait until that light flashes or goes out,(may take 20 mins)then it has relearned the key code.Hopefully that's all it was that prevented power from completing the starting circuit, which includes the neutral safety switch in addition to the ignition switch and anti theft module. Also try putting it in neutral and try to start it.

If the Passlock switch has been replaced, the computer has to "learn" the new Passlock code. You will need to hook up a battery charger to perform the learning process. (It takes about 30 minutes with the key in the "ON" position and it will run the battery down.)

Step 1:

Turn the key to the "START" position and release to the "RUN" position. The "SECURITY" light will be flashing. After about 10 minutes, the light will stop flashing.
.
Step 2:

Turn the key "OFF" then back to the "RUN" position. (Do NOT try to crank it yet) The light will start flashing again. Wait about 10 minutes for it to stop flashing.
.
Step 3:
.
Turn the key "OFF" and back to "RUN" one last time. The light will be flashing again. This time, when it stops flashing, do not turn the ignition off. Instead, turn the key from the "RUN" position to "START". The engine should start and run. The computer has now learned the new Passlock code.

My 2001 oldsmobile alero will not start and the securtiy ligh keeps coming on and the car will still not start.

00 + GM
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start). Allow the key to return to the on position. (same as if the vehicle would have started)
2. The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
3. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns off) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes.
5. On the next cycle of turning the ignition key from off to crank the vehicle should start
6. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned and this completes the cycle.
7. Clear any DTC's with a scan tool if necessary. DTC history will be cleared after 100 ignition cycles.

Try resetting your passlock system by following the instructions above.
Thank you for suing fixya and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running again.

sounds like starter solenoid, try cycling the ignition on start on start repeatly but do not go back to the off position off on start will activate the fuel pump repeatly and might flood it,with a faulty solenoid you can usually cycle the ignition repeatly and it will finally engage the starter

Electronic chip in key

As far as bypassing the securtiy chip, we can't tell you that one as it would assist any user on here to steal your car (or others).
When you turn the key to attempt to start it do the dash lights dim or even go out ?
