Question about 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis
The reset use to be enter the old number, hold #9 key while bumping #7 key once, then enter new code#. You could check with a Dealer on that though. You would need to rekey the Ignition and Security Brain for the Keyswitch.
Remember, getting into the car is only part of it. If the old owner has a old Key, he/she could break a window and just use the key to drive away. For that matter, the doorlock can be opened with the old Key and you do not need a Keypad combination.
You have several choices, take it to a Dealer and have the Ignition resequenced with new keys, add an Alarm, independent of the Factory Alarm, or talk to the Police. Bad part about resequencing the original Antitheft is the doors will still open with a Key. The car just would not be driveable, but anything inside the car and trunk could be taken.
An Independent alarm with Remotes will go off if any doors or the trunk is opened, which is much better, but sometimes killing the Ignition with a second alarm will interfere with the original. You can either scare the old owner away or force a confrontation with what you do next.
There are also "Silent Alarms" which page you when your vehicle is being messed with. You stay friends with the neighbors without waking them up and if you have a switch to disable the siren, you can have both a Silent and an Audible alarm from the same system.
I hope my solution is very helpful to you.
