Question about Chevrolet Malibu

2 Answers

My car is full of gas yet the gauge keeps going up and down. One minute it shows it's full and then it drops down to the empty and the orange light starts dinging and it reads empty. In a 20 mile drive it did this at least 10 times. I cut the car off and restarted it and drove it again later and it continues to do this. What could the problem be?

In the tank there is a sender it sends a signal to the gage they work on a ohms scale. that is a resistance to electron flow. 90 to 200 ohms they very auto to auto a little. the sender has a fine wire in there & they break or corrode. or the ground wire is loose at tank to frame, this will take some investigating..

I would start by having someone replace the sender unit in the fuel tank. This is simply a float in the gas tank which rides on the top of the gas and is connected to a variable resistor. As the gas is consumed, the float sinks moving the variable resistor and that sends a signal to the gas gauge reflecting the lower fuel level in the tank.

It is not uncommon for the floats to develop a leak, and/or to fail completely. It is not going to be cheap to remove the tank and replace the sender, so consider having the fuel pump replaced at the same time so as to avoid paying that labor cost again. The fuel pump is right next to the sender.

When the gas tank is full the gas gauge shows as empty. When the gas tank is empty the gas gauge shows as full.

Well that tells me that someone installed the wrong fuel level sensor. Your going to have to drop the tank and pull the pump and float assymbly out. Then go to a parts store and get a sending unit that has the opposite resistance of that sending unit. Just wait until the tank is empty so its a lot lighter. You can call the parts store or go down and see if there is multiple sending units. The sending units work by resistance, when the tank is full the float moves up and turns a wheel in the sending unit, which either removes or increases the resistance causing the gauge to lower. The sending units either give full resistance at full or no resistance at full and then changes as the level goes down until it does the opposite at empty.

Dashboard gauge

check the grounds on your fuel tank sending unit, must drop the tank to do this. with the tank down, remove the ground and look at your fuel gauge it should read full or empty,if it does not it may be a sending unit
