So, if it is idling around 500 in gear (automatic) could that cause stalls? Is it possible to raise the idle?

So, if it is idling at 450-500 in drive, can that cause a stalling situation? Can the idle be adjusted?

    hi,

yep thats a little low. autozone does free computer code reading. Im not for sure -it might have an idle screw. if it does it will be right around where the throttle and cruise control linkage go into the throttle body, look closely and it might be a special tool to adjust it. It may need a throttle position sensor but see what codes its storing before you buy parts. jm

What is the idle speed for a 8m pontiac grand am?

The normal idle speed for almost every car is about 7500 to 8000. I'm not sure if you would or not, but if you have performance parts on it them i would stick a little over 8000 but around 7500 is the best idle speed to have.

Very probably a leaking exhaust. Its probably the joint between the manifold and the exhaust system. The ABS issue is probably a red herring.

Note. Get it checked out as that smell contains a lot of Carbon Monoxide and could cause you to pass out and die. Serious stuff!

My 1999 pontiac grand am will idle low, but does not cut off.

Sounds like your oil pressure sensor may be faulty. Or your oil level is very low. Your engine should idle as low as 650 rpm without your light coming on.

it would not be an O2 sensor, period, they would never cause a high idle, have u had this checked for trouble codes? A sticking idle speed control air bypass can cause this problem as well as a throttle position sensor, but run the codes, Kragen does it for free was well as other parts stores.

If you can, please provide more information about your vibration. Mine vibrates at idle, but it's within normal operating ranges for 217,000 miles.
You could also take a look at the engine mounts.
