Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. If you have a vehicle that will not crank or just clicks when you try to start it, there are a few different things you can check to get back on the road. First, if it is clicking, or just clicks a time or two, this usually means there is no power to the starter. You need to check your battery first. You need to test it and make sure the battery is good and able to hold a proper charge. You want to make sure your battery terminals and the battery post are cleaned very good. You can take a metal brush to the terminals and the battery post to clean them. Make sure the metal ends of the battery terminals are not cracked or damaged. They can prevent you from getting a good connection. You also want to inspect the wire that goes from the battery to the starter for damage. Once your at the starter, you want to make sure it is not caked with oil or other fluids.. If it is, it can prevent the starter from working. You want to make sure the starter is hooked up properly and the connection is not damaged or loose. Your starter may be bad. Try hitting the starter a few times. It may be enough to make it catch and start, just enough to get you home. Of course, it will need changed. If you ever work on the starter, make sure you unplug the battery before you do. It may be your starter solenoid that is the problem, so don't forget to check that as well. Now, if it is not clicking, you should check your ignition fuse first. If your inside lights are not working or your lights are flickering, this is a sign of a bad connection. Once again, you need to refer back to the battery. Many people don't know that if the battery is not giving off the full amount of power, chances are, the parts will not work correctly. Lastly, if the starter is not engaging the fly wheel, your car will not start as well. By learning what to check for when this happens, you can save time and money in the future. As always, thank you for reading and best wishes. Thanks for using FixYa.

Why doesn't it crank or start?

Check battery connections and voltage. fuel pump only runs for a few seconds to start and runs again while cranking.

Hi there, My car is not turning on at all. When I turn the key the oil light and sometimes the battery light will come on but that's is it. The engine wont turn over, doesnt even make any sound?

Check and make sure your battery is fully charged. If so, I would check and make sure your are getting the signal to the starter when the key is in the crank position. If you are getting power to the starter solenoid when they key is in the crank position I would have the starter checked and probably replaced. If you do not get power to the solenoid when the key is in the crank position I would look to possibly an ignition switch, wiring and connectors, or fuses or fuseable links.

Lights and everything works, but jeep won't crank.

find the starter relay and check for power there if you have power jump the contact side of the relay to see if the jeep will crank if it does there is a problem on the coil or "control" circuit most likely something to do with the ignition or possibly a fuse. If you jump it and it doesn't crank check to make sure ur starter has proper ground and if it does and it's getting power you sir need a starter

My 2000 528i will not crank intermittenly

Possible faulty ignition switch. common problem on ALL bmw's.

You need to check you are getting power at the crank wire when you try to crank the engine. Also check that the crank signal (12v) is also getting to the starter (could be dodgy wire between ignition and starter).

Starter continues to run even with the key off

You need to test the trigger wire on the starter to see if it is still getting power when the key is off, and the starter is cranking. The trigger wire is the small terminal on the starter that gets power with the key in the crank position. If the trigger wire has power with the key off the problem is in the electrical system, probably the ignition switch. If the trigger wire doesn't have power and the starter continues to crank, with the key off, the problem will be inside the starter.

I replaced the starter solenoid but it will still not start what is your suggestion

First test for power at starter,if your getting power to starter then starter is bad, also check the batt cable going to starter at starter for corrsion at terminal,if that cable has power and the small wire gets power when key in the crank spot then starter is no good,

My mercedes 1997 c230 wont crank it has gud battery but it wont crank at all

There could be a couple of things going on here. First you could have a bad ground (or connection in general), which would result in no power being provided to the starter motor. The second possibility is that you have a faulty ignition switch. The third possibility is that you have a bad starter motor or starter motor solenoid.

I would start by having an assistant stick their head in the engine compartment while you try to start it. If you hear a click coming from the starter motor, which is at the rear of the engine, then it is getting power to engage the solenoid but the motor is not spinning. In this case you have a bad starter motor. If you hear nothing, you may have an electrical problem where no power is getting to the starter motor, or you have a bad solenoid.

To check to see if power is getting to the starter you need to check the continuity of the lines using a multimeter. You should be able to find the problem spot by doing this. Good luck

Won't crank, relay good.

Fuse would be in the outside fuse box. Look for the one labeled starter. If you are not getting power to the starter, could be an ignition switch.

Car wont start, no clicks no sound

make sure you have power getting to your starter when you crank. check the small nut on the starter. should have 12 v or very close to it. this will tell you if your getting power to the starter or if somethign before the starter and something maybe with your anti theft system or not. its hard to say online cause of that anti theft. doest the light flash at all? the anti theft light?

if your getting power to the starter when you crank make sure your getting good power to the starter by turning on the head lights and see if they dim. a good starter will cause the headlites to dim when attempting to start. if nothing dims check connections. or assume bad starter motor. make sure your also getting power to the main starter stud as well.

good luck

1988 Doge Ram will not turn over.

check your starter relay in the power distribution center. if you are not getting any crank. with a test light or dvom you can check the small signal wire on your starter solenoid when the key is in the crank position there should be power on this wire. it sounds like you are not getting signal to the starter from the ignition switch
