SOURCE: 1996 suburban makes grinding noise in 2 wheel drive

sounds like the clip on the rear output shaft its probably broke. do this by removing the rear driveshaft, and the tail of the transfer case, there are 4 bolts holding it in place. then grab the output shaft and see if it has any front to back movement. if so pull it all the way to the rear and you should see a groove at the front part of the shaft where the clip goes. Then you should find the pieces fo the clip in the tail housing. One person said he found the replacement clip at a local tranny shop. I am calling the dealership parts counter for a new clip for my 97 Tahoe tomorrow. Hope this helps..

SOURCE: 04 cavalier makes grinding noise in front end

3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

Grinding from rear wheel and turning right but when jacked up wheel turns but won't when wheel is off?

It could be your wheel bearing. The grinding might be due to the weight of the car pushing on the bearing, when you have it jacked there is no pressure, so no grinding. Also, be sure your brake pads are good, they can cause a grinding noise but it would also probably, but not necessairly, make the noise when jacked up.

Noise on front driver side and i replaces rotors and brakes

may be the backing plate is hitting. or it may be the wheel bearing is bad. check by making turns and see if the noise goes away or starts grinding like a washing machine. IF grinding is worse replace wheel bearring.

When i switch it into 4 wheel drive it makes a grinding noise and then wont kick back into 2 wheel

You should be totally stationary when you go from 2 to 4 wheel drive. There should be no grinding noise. Something has been broken, and I assume the transfer box is most likely, but it could also be the wheel hubs in front.

I have a grinding noise near the back drivers side wheel it comes and goes sometimes whilst driving and driving at low speeds it also happens when i go round corners. There is a burning smell near rear...

Sounds like a broken bearing. If your wheel is beginning to wobble it will make contact with the brake shoes and this will them very hot to the point of giving off a burning smell
