This could be several reasons why the car would stop. The solenoid may be bad (the electrical part that makes you change gears) or the speed sensor on the transmission. It could be electrical or mechanical in nature.

Have you tried running it through all gears without switching to over drive if it happens? Is your idle low or erratic or rough?

Does the car stall immediately or only at certain rpm or speed when you are on overdrive?

Thanks

THis may be an issue with a wiring. is this the fan for the air con or the radiator? . each of these fans has wires and sockets at one end. Try removing the one that coincides with the problem. I should warn you to do this test in a short while to prevent the engine from heating. If that did not work, put the socket back. Check the relays and the boxes. Terminals may have gone bad. If it i the wiring you will have to trace the wires from the relays and check for bad wires. Same goes with the wire on the shift selector inside the car.

1993 cutless cierra, when driving, all is fine, then when you come to a stop sign, or a light, the engine cuts off. It will start immediately, but when you put it into gear, it cuts off. had to have it...

sounds like the lockup converter is not releasing when you stop, like stopping with a stick shift and not pushing in the clutch. lockup solenoid most likely. Could just disconnect the lockup sol. (won't lock up at all) or replace the solenoid.

93 Lumina 6cyl 3.1 engine shaking @ overdrive gear

check your camshaft and crankshaft sensors. When defective, it may cause stalls, misfires, loss of power. Also have check the engine for vacuum leaks. Hopefully this helps!!

Hi,i have a 2004 hyundai accent.i noticed recently that when i drive on the free way with overdrive off, the car starts to get hot.it seems normal and i cant seem to have clue why this would happen.all...

When overdrive is off, your engine works harder to keep up the freeway speed. It could spin an extra 800 to 1200 rpm just to stay at the same speed as when od is on. This generates alot of heat. If you have one of the smaller engines it may just be your engine is working that hard. Or it may be you thermostat is goin out. When a thermostat goes bad it starts to open and close less when it gets hot, until it stops opening at all. This is when an engine overheats. If yours is starting to go, you may only notice it when od is off, and you are going down the freeway, because your engine is working so much harder at that time, than any other time you are driving it.

I have a 92GL, somestimes it will not shift into high gear(Drive 3 or what ever the top gear is). Somestimes it works fine. Car has 218000 miles on it. Any ideas to what might be causing this and/or the...

My car just had the same problem and i bought a over-drive bypass plate from IPD and now it works just fine, just put it on yesterday. My overdrive solenoid was the problem. So, instead of paying $160 for a new one, i paid $40 for the bypass plate. I drive a 91 Volvo 940 Turbo with over 250K miles and now i have my overdrive back. I think if your overdrive relay was bad, the shift light would come on on the dashboard. So it may just be your solenoid. Shifting

Try putting the trans in 3rd gear when going up hills. It's trying to get into overdrive & doesn't have enough power to maintain overdrive so it is kicking in & out of gear trying to keep up with the engine.your owners manual should tell you about being in overdrive while going up hils.Good luck,
