It could be a bad cap or rotor or possibly the distributor not turning. Pull the cap off and see if the rotor spins when the vehicle is being cranked.

1987 Ford Ranger 2.9 crank / no start. Does tachometer function somehow affect the spark timing?

No, but the tach signal may help you determine if coil is getting signal to spark. If tach needle is moving when engine is cranking over, that means the coil primary circuit is being turned on and off, and that means the ignition control module is working.

check plugs and wires. if you have a spark, check timing, then move onto fuel system to check for fuel supply and pressure

In May I put in a rebuilt distributer, ingnition module, coil and throttle sensor, it had no spark. At that time it corrected it, now a month later is has no spark again. It is a 1987, 2.3 liter. Help...

Do it again and be sure to use dielectric grease on the tfi connection. When dry the pickup coil contacts will erode fast causing intermittent operation of your vehicle.

You have spark at the coil wire but not at the plugs right? Have you tried a cap and rotor?

try to replace the coil and all the spark plugs also make sure that the plugs are gapped right. that info will be on the evaporation sticker onthe core support in the front of the truck under hood. I think it is 0.004 not 100% sure on that. I hope that helps
