CHANGE FUEL FILTER AND CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS,CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO MISS, MAKE SURE SPARK PLUG GAP IS 0.060, LEAN MISFIRE FROM WEAK FUEL PUMP,CHECK FUEL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 40 - 50 PSI. IF EVEVY THING CHECK OUT OKAY,MISSING PROBLEM COULD BE LOW CYLINDER COMPRESSION OR INTAKE MANIFOLD AIR LEAKS.DO A COMPRESSION TEST IF NECESSARY.

Inspect the throttle position (TP) sensor and related wiring. Refer to DTC P0123 .

Monitor the 24X crank sensor and the CMP sensor signal present parameters on the scan tool. If both are not responding, test the sensor feed circuit. Both sensors use a separate feed circuit but are internally connected to power. Test all CKP sensor A and CMP sensor circuits for intermittents. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Monitor the 3X parameter on the scan tool. If the 3X is not responding, inspect the CKP sensor B and circuits for intermittents. Inspect the ignition control (IC) circuit, IC timing control circuit, low resolution engine speed signal circuit and the low reference circuit for intermittents. If these circuits become open, or shorted, they may not set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) immediately, but are capable of causing driveability complaints. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Test the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for proper operation. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Description .

Inspect the Transaxle Range Switch input with the vehicle in drive and the gear selector in drive or overdrive


Ignition System

Inspect for proper ignition voltage output using the following steps:


1.
Attach the J 26792 Spark Tester to engine ground.


2.
Connect the spark plug end of the spark plug wire to the J 26792 . Leave the other end of the spark plug wire connected to the coil being tested.


3.
Connect the spark plug end of the companion spark plug wire to ground. The companion spark plug wire is the wire attached to the corresponding coil tower.


4.
Crank the engine while observing the J 26792 . A spark should be observed.


5.
Repeat the above steps for each coil.

If spark is not present at the coils, inspect for the following conditions:


-
Coils--Cracks, carbon tracking/arcing, or a resistance value outside the specified range

Coil Resistance
5000-8000 ohms (5K-8K ohms)

Spark plug wires--Signs of arcing, cross firing, cracks, carbon tracking, plug boot damage, pinched, improper routing, or a resistance value outside the specified range

Spark Plug Wire Resistance
9 686 ohms per meter (3,000 ohms per foot)
Important: : Spraying the secondary ignition wires with a light mist of water may help locate an intermittent problem. Ignition voltage will arc to ground when a secondary component is faulty.

Intermittent miss at idle and steady speeds


You need to hook up a computer scanner to the engine to find out what the fault code is [indication of what is causing the miss]. The CHECK ENGINE lamp lights up when a fault code is detected and set in the computer's memory. ALWAYS replace all the spark plugs on a Ford when there is a miss. Those "alleged" 100,000 mile spark plugs are really only good for about 60,000 to 65,000 miles. Using them longer than 60,000 miles causes the ignition coils to overheat [from trying to fire the huge gaps on those worn out spark plugs] & fail. Hopefully, you will get a fault code to tell you which cylinder is the problem. When you disconnect the battery, you give the PCM [engine computer] a case of amnesia, and it forgets the fault codes it has stored in it's memory. That's a foolish move, as it only removes the info a "real" mechanic needs to solve the problem. Use only Motorcraft, NGK or Denso spark plugs. Other brands won't last in a Ford product.

NO POWER TO THE DISTRIBUTOR ON 87 CADI DEVILLE THERE IS POWER TO CAP


I owned a similar 1986 caddy

12 Volts on pink wire to dist with key on

The top of the cap is the HEI Ignition Coil

Inside dist is the pickup coil (no crank sensor)
& ignition module with the 3 or 4 wires

Maybe the module failed- if you have no spark
at plug wires

2003 S10 2.2L low speed miss


Could be a vac leak or other ignition problem.
A vac leak could be covered up by the extra fuel and higher idle speed when the engine is cold. And if it is a gasket leaking the leak can get bigger as the engine warms up.
A faulty plug wire or coil could start failing when hot.
A solid miss-fire should make the check engine light come on and set a trouble code.

93' cavalier, very rough running. Missing badly at all speeds and loads, including at idle in park. changed plugs and no change in symptons. Is this an injected motor (4 cyl)?


Yes, this is fuel-injected engine. Look for vacuum leaks and then consider replacing the ignition coil (located on back side of the motor). Just follow the spark plug wires and you'll find it.

The car idles rough at low idle speed approx 1000 rpm or less it smoothes out at about 1200. once engage the drive train it realy miss and stalls and it doesnt matter if it forward or reverse it stall and...


You probably are developing serious ignition problems.Your coil pack may be becoming in jeopardy as open plugs wires will re-route KV's straight through the module to ground as this high energy goes to the easiest path. I would isolate possible dropping cyclinders by pulling ignition wires while looking for corrosion on the coil ends and oil soaked or faulty(cracked) spark plugs on the engine/spark plug side of the wires.The upper engine mount(torque axis) may be sagging and will exaserbate this condition as well.Here are 4 possible parts that could get you feeling brand new

Missfire


You may need a new wiring harness. They have to be ordered from Germany. This is my guess. (I am having a similar issue with my '94; rough idle, #4 cylinder not firing intermittantly, replaced plugs and 8 ignition coils; new harness is my mechanics guess)

Intermittant stuttering/surging when starting


Rough idle or stalling. Ignition timing is controlled by the electronic control ignition timing system. The standard reference ignition timing data for the engine operating conditions are pre-programmed in the memory of the engine control module (ECM). The engine operating conditions (speed, load, warm-up condition, etc.) are detected by the various sensors. Based on these sensor signals and the ignition timing data, signals to interrupt the primary current are sent to the ECM. The ignition coil is activated, and timing is controlled. Check for any fault at: Spark plugs faulty Replace plugs Ignition wiring faulty Replace wiring Ignition coil faulty Replace ignition coil High tension cord faulty Replace high tension cord
