Question about Ford Taurus
You need someone to check all of the Exhaust parts under the hood, then the pipes from the engine bay to the tailpipe. This is a dangerous condition.
Also look at a part called a PCV valve which is on top of the valve cover. The people at Autozone, Oreillys, and Advance will scan your car for defects for free and they can show you where the pcv valve goes. This valve is cheap, and makes crankcase fumes stay in the engine. It may be what you are smelling.
Ford has one of the better exhaust systems, using Stainless steel on much of the system. There are some smaller Pollution tubes going to the EGR valve and the plastic Solenoids have electric connections and Vacuum lines on them. Sometimes these metal lines can rust and will leave a smell of sulfur with a telltale rust deposit on them. Check those metal tubes out.
There are also metal parts referred to as "donuts" because of their shape and they fit on the joints between the bigger exhaust pipes and the Catalytic converter. You can have a leaking muffler as you suspect, but the exhaust fumes have to go through all of the rest of the parts I mentioned, just to get to the muffler.
I hope my Solution is very helpful to you. Anything less than a complete Inspection is an unfinished job.
