The car computer keeps track of the number of kms/miles that was done since the last service when this light and counter was reset: according to the car computer mileage log, the car is now due for its next 'regular' service: take it to a garaged for its overdue service and they will reset the warning.
If it is only "perform service", this is likely your mileage counter telling you to get an oil change. If it was a "check engine light" it would be amber in color and would require use of a scanner to acquire codes and check for faults. Here's how to reset: On a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo if the "Perform Service" light is in the middle of the dashSimply press the "SET" button until the display shows the "0 miles to service",Then hold the other button below it down until it resets to "3000".
1. Make sure you have Trip odometer 1 (T1) selected. 2. Turn the ignition key to 'I'-position. 3. Press the trip odometer reset - keep it down. 4. Turn the key to 'II'. 5. Wait till the service light blinks a few times or you hear a 'beep'. 6.Release the trip odometer reset. 7. Turn the key back to '0' - service light is reset.
If this doesn't work, try: a) 2. before 3. then continue as above b) 5. Wait until the previous mileage appears again to the trip odometer. c) 7. before 6.
You can reset the service counter at any time. Do not forget to service your car!
this could be due to low oil. you need to check your oil level. if it is full i would do an oil change with a bmw filter. there is a difference in filters. the service engine soon light will have to be diagnosed. meaning pull codes to point you in the right direction. great car though. happy holidays

The service light has nothing to do with the engine light. It can't be trigged by the ECM.
The service light are only trigged by one of 3 counters (time since last service, engine hours or mileage).

sir, service engine soon is your emissions light malfunction indicator, meaning your car will not pass a smog test. It will not pass inspection in most places either. It can't be reset and stay off till the problem is fixed. Any auto parts store can retrieve the code for you and most like Autozone do it for free, Most common reason for the service engine soon light tends to be an oxygen sensor. But with the code it will lead you to the problem. Hope this helps.
