Question about Ford Escape

1 Answer

I have a 2001 ford escape. The engine light has been coming on and going off for about a year now. We changed the gas cap but that only worked for a while. The car runs likes its new, we have never missed a servicing but it won't pass the smog test in CA. The repair shop reset it and told us to wait a few days and take it back to the smog place but the smog place told us that by the time the computer finishes its routine the light will come back on and it still won't pass. What to do?

The error code was P0457 and I was told that it was about the gas cap. They tested the gas cap and it was good, also the place where the gas is pumped into is good, too, not chipped.

The repair shop should have used a scanner to detect the error on the computer. Otherwise it would be difficult to troubleshoot the car accurately. If they did run the scanner, what were the error codes generated?

It may just be a problem with the oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter that is why you would not pass the test but it would be best to get the error every time you get the check engine light.

how far did they check the gas cap? Did they check the entire openings it may not be on the gas cap but the assembly may have leaks or gaps between the cap. Although that may be unlikely track the hoses from the gas tank. There should be more than one. One is the line to the engine. Have it traced, another line should go to the canister which filters the smell. Basically there are passages from the gas tank make sure you check them. Gas fumes passes to it to prevent negative pressure to the gas tank to prevent damage to the tank.

2001 Ford Escape 3.0L V6 Engine Code P1409

Had this code for over 2 years on my 02 escape. FINALLY, found the solution. DONT replace your egr vacuum solenoid (unless you see broken pins on the connector). You can always test the solenoid to see if it still works if you suspect the solenoid is the culprit. Rather, most likely the problem will be in your electrical harness that connects from the solenoid to the pcm. I had no visible broken wires. However, in my case, my female connector harness that plugs into the solenoid was faulty. Replaced it by soldering the wires from a "new" harness that i got from the junk yard. If this fails for you, the problem will be almost guaranteed to be in either your pcm hardware or a broken pin at the pcm connection.

Gas cap light on then engine trouble light came on. 34000 miles. Should not be happening

Those things will happen, twice a year,
for the rest of your life.

That is the technology ,we have to
work with.

Tighten gas cap

If light stays on, have it tested, then
replaced,if bad

The other light, will have a code,
you need to get and diagnose,
whatever sytstem has a malfuntion.

What causes my ford escape to rough idle occasionally?

Could be a fault in the Evap system (a loose/defective gas-cap), water in the fuel, defective I.A.C. is possible.
When the rough idle issue occurs does the engine light come on?
