You can till you burn up the transmission. The car not going to 4th could be your in the limp mode, there is something wrong with the engine or transmission and the ECM has put the car in limp mode. If there is a Auto Zone around your area, have the car scanned for DTC codes causing your ECM to run under limp mode. Keep an eye on your transmission fluid, if it started to burn ( dark Burgundy color ) service the transmission and hope you did not burn too much of your clutch in your clutch pack. Keep me posted, and good luck be glad to help.

Update: Differential shop says all components appear to be in good condition, ring and pinion pattern good, no metal in fluid. Slight noise audible, apparently not differential in origin.

There is a noise and vibration, almost like an engaged ABS. It pulses and has a deep vibration, it does not sound like grinding and it is only present when coasting or braking. It's completely gone when...

Could be u-joints. Play goes away under Torque (accelerating) and returns when parts shift (unload) from Torque like coasting or braking.

Transmission or Torque converter not disengaging, hanging up in overdrive.

Not good if it makes a grinding noise. Needs a tech or replacement as something most likely has come loose inside the transmission.

The sun-shell in the transmission has cracked if you do not have reverse, and are in a low gear range with no overdrive. As for the grinding, that is the remnants of the sun-shell.
